If you are going to JoCo, make sure you join a Section of the International Actuarial Association. Joining an IAA Section costs CAN$60 per year, which gives you a JoCo discount of CAN$75-100. Section membership also gives you free access to the excellent video library of actuview. If your national actuarial association does not already give you actuview access, that's a great deal! If you are a consulting actuary, consider joining IACA Section, focused on international consulting actuaries. First, let’s get clear on that: your life time has THE highest value and you have to use it wisely 🙏 Besides, you can only be in one place at a time and multitasking is a myth - proven by science 😎 So, how to get the most out of a conference or a trade show? How to multiply knowledge? How to get broader view? Don’t waste your time with small talk, ask everyone one simple question: “What stood out to you during the conference the most?” Of course, some variations are possible: “Which innovation makes you feel excited about the future?” Also good: “Which trend or market development was surprising for you?” And then, let the people talk and you listen. You go to conferences to meet people, to interact, to initiate collaborations, to get to know different opinions - lots of it means: LISTEN as hard as you can 🙏 Ever wondered why introverts have often the best ideas and the smartest contributions in a meeting? Because they LISTEN way more than they talk 💡 During the recent Battery Show I had the chance to train my own approach asking smart people those questions - very publicly indeed 😅 Because imagine you don’t just have a random person sitting in from of you, but somebody who has done it for years as a job to observe the market, analyse the trends, discover new developments and based on that define the business strategy.
