In 1908, Johnny Hayes set the first recorded marathon world record (men’s) with a time of 2:55:18 – which to this day is still a very respectable time. 115 years later, Kelvin Kiptum set a new benchmark of 2:00:35 – nearly a full hour faster than Hayes. A 45% improvement in speed begs the question – what’s changed? Some of this will be the effort people put in, but arguably the biggest driver is technology. When the Olympics kick-off in Paris on Friday, this cohort of athletes will have trained with more information at their disposal than ever before – with continuous logging of food-intake, physical exertion and sleep quality, and millimeter-level tracking of body position to make sure that they’re training – and performing – at their optimum. Garmin, WHOOP and Polar (amongst others) watches track the same physiological information to let amateurs train in the same way as these athletes; and Nike’s vaporfly range offers pro-level shoe performance to the public. With this technological arms race, amateurs are now routinely able to beat Johnny’s world record time! So, in sport, staying still is equivalent to going backwards – as everyone else develops and moves past you. The same is true of the tech that helps to drive this performance; with new features routinely deployed onto the latest generation of smartwatch to help consumers make better health decisions, new AI models making better decisions from the same information (used to good effect in radiology departments) and ever more powerful computing clusters – so with a select few exceptions, if you’re not developing, you’re losing out. To keep ahead of your competition, and maintain your gold-medal position, talk to Springboard Pro Ltd. about your product development needs. #productdevelopment #technology #running #Olympics
