Glad I was able to attend last week's #TimberTuesday sessions at #ClimateWeekNYC. Learned about some new projects and gained new insights on mass timber and near-term growth catalysts. Some takeaways:
- Better policy alignment, increased value chain development, and greater clarity on costs vs benefits, among other issues, will help to further drive demand and greater adoption of mass timber, which currently accounts for just 1% of building construction materials in N. America.
- While environmental and social benefits are clear, more needs to be done to drive efficiencies and verify potential cost benefits.
- Environmental benefits vs costs, life cycle and embodied carbon assessments, and other comparative analyses are key to further validating the net benefits of mass timber over traditional concrete-based projects. Reliable, high-quality data is critical not only for end-to-end transparency throughout supply chains but also for the performance and accuracy of any comparative work and findings.
Our working forests are special and it’s great to see how sustainably sourced wood products not only provide substantial opportunities for human, carbon, and economic benefits, but also have the potential to transform industries like real estate & construction. Exciting times for the mass timber movement. Congrats to all involved for an insightful and highly productive day.
