If you’ve travelled on State Highway 50 (SH50) through Tikokino lately, you would’ve seen work happening around Mangamate Stream bridge. We are repairing the damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle, when floodwaters scoured away part of the bank underneath the bridge, compromising the bridge abutment (the part of the bridge that connects the bridge to the land). The road shoulder slumped away, and the road is down to a single lane until the repair is complete. Like many of the East Coast recovery sites, repairs are focused around increasing ground stability to provide resilience for the road when the ground becomes waterlogged. Ground anchors are a crucial part of the recovery work. Ground anchors are long steel rods which give the ground and road extra stability. At Mangamate Stream bridge, specialist crews are installing 26 ground anchors to stabilise the bank and support the bridge and road above. The team drilled holes up to 12 metres deep, placing the steel anchors into the holes and grouting them into place. Next we'll reinforce the anchored slope with steel mesh and spray a layer of shotcrete (a spray-on concrete) onto the steel mesh to add extra stability and protect the hillside below the road. As you can see in this photo, this work requires big machinery to drill the anchors in. We built a temporary access road over Mangamate Stream so the drilling machinery can reach the site. To help protect the clean waterway, we've diverted the stream and put in silt fences to contain any sediment. One of the big challenges at this site has been the winter weather. The stream fills up quickly when it rains and, depending on the water flow, can cause damage to work in progress. The weather can also make it unsafe for machinery and crews to work but, with good weather, we expect to be finished here in September. This is part of the work we are doing to ensure SH50 is a strong, reliable, and safe road. How to install a gravel pump on a sand pumping ship The gravel pump is also a type of centrifugal slurry pump. Because of its wide flow channel and good passing performance, it is often used in the sand pumping and sand making industry. When pumping sand, the gravel pump is usually installed on the sand pumping vessel. So how to install our gravel pump on a sand pumping ship. 1. Install the gravel pump in the ship's cabin. In this case, a diesel engine is generally used instead of a motor to drive the pump. The boat is usually equipped with a high-pressure clean Pansto Pump to wash up the sand at the bottom of the river. The inlet pipe of the gravel pump is generally a hose with a steel frame, so that it is not easy to collapse the pipe when pumping sand, or a section of PE pipe is connected to the front end of the hose, which will prevent the inlet pipe from being collapsed. The advantage of this installation is that it can be moved with the ship at any time. 2. There is another type that is installed on the river table, but this kind of installation requires the pump to be primed first, because our gravel pump does not have a suction function. Or add a vacuum tank, which can form a backflow so that the pump can operate normally.
