A suction line diameter of a centrifugal pump is always greater than the discharge line diameter because of cavitation. Following are the determination to keep the suction line size more than the discharge. *As we all know that as the area increases, the pressure also increases. therefore, a larger suction line reduces the pressure drop that's the reason suction line diameter is greater and pressure is above the vapour pressure in order to avoid cavitation problems. *Thats why suction line is typically designed to keep friction loss to a minimum. This in order to ensure sufficient availability of NPSHa to meet the NPSHr of the centrifugal pump. *One of the concepts is typically sizing a liquid line pipe with the larger diameter based on the velocity in the line. As the area of the line increases, the velocity also decreases, and as per API 14E liquid line velocity should be between 3 to 15ft/s. Therefore, to maintain the optimum velocity and to avoid cavitation problems, this action mostly takes place in centrifugal pumps suction line.

Quick Fact from the site. When not installing a PICV (Pressure Independent Control Valve) in a chilled water piping system, a normal valve should be installed. In this case, a DRV (Double Regulating Valve) should also be included for balancing purposes. However, if you install a PICV, there is no need to install a DRV.
