Detective Narratives and Writing the Serial Narrative were the two classes I enjoyed in the Fall quarter of 2023. I'll walk you through what I did and the work I created in these classes: Detective Narratives Throughout the quarter, we read the tales of Author Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and puzzled over Agatha Christi's mystery on Soldier Island. My favorite piece of detective literature we read was a graphic novel adaptation of Paul Aster's City of Glass. The book is an experience, and what it says about words is immaculate. At the end of the quarter, we were tasked with creating a detective figure based on the literature we wrote. Now, I have the pleasure of introducing my detective figure, Manuel Moth, who may one day star in his own comic. He's a cryptid working to ensure that the fellow cryptids of this world have representation when it comes to the strange cases surrounding them. Writing the Serial Narrative In this class, we aimed to create an ongoing series consisting of 9 installments in 10 weeks. Inspired by H.G. Wells' "War of the Worlds" and the experience created when it cackled over the radio, resulting in panic among Americans, Mar of The Worlds attempts to display the drastic side effects of cloning and eugenics. These screenplays are a piece in a bigger planned story where Mar is the only one left. "What will keep readers immersed in the fictive dream?" This question repeatedly popped up during a recent book editing course. But I think it applies to all types of writing or content, not just fiction. Every brand or company is proposing a "fictive dream" to their audience. It might be the ideal future state, a promise of a better life. You're painting a possible future together that doesn't currently exist. It's fiction until it's not. It's a dream until it's reality. So I find myself asking: What is taking your audience out of the fictive dream? How can we engage them in that proposed future together? And off we go ✍🏼

#creative_writing #reading At the last creative writing and Shakespeare reading meeting I had with the group this week, we did an exercise in which participants had to write about something that happened to them that day in a storytelling format. After writing these things down, we discovered that behind the small, everyday things lie eternal questions, such as loneliness and friendship, determination, overcoming obstacles, the aspiration for freedom, the fluidity of time, and more. And when we manage to touch on these themes, it no longer matters what story we 'dress' them in. It can be contemporary or occur in the past, it can be between people or between mystical creatures. But its relevance will remain. Thus, even after 500 years, we still continue to cry, rejoice, and be amazed by Shakespeare's plays.
