The big cable companies, Comcast and Charter Communications, are having a tough time gaining broadband customers, and boosting revenues, in the face of fierce competition from fiber overbuilders and MNO fixed wireless access offerings. Those challenges are reflected in the numbers that both companies reported in their 3Q24 results. #infrastructure #capex #fwa #broadband
To help put its broadband biz back on track, Comcast plans to launch a wave of simplified broadband/mobile convergence packages (focused on higher speed tiers and greater emphasis on wireless) in markets that have implemented 'Project Genesis' network upgrades (think DAA, vCMTS deployments & mid-splits). No additional detail yet on pricing and packaging, but perhaps more will be shared at the Comcast 'Converge' event in Washington, D.C., next week. Comcast's Dave Watson says operator has deployed vCMTS to 50% of HFC network footprint and is on pace to reach ~70% by year-end. Comcast expected to complete mid-split upgrades to the majority of its HFC plant by year-end.

The combined entity now serves seven provinces, making it the largest provider in fixed broadband and pay-TV subscriptions, surpassing Bell Canada. Rogers and Shaw have extensively deployed DOCSIS 3.0 and 3.1 technologies across their hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) networks of comparable size, each covering just shy of 5 million homes as of July 2023. Rogers has further plans to implement DOCSIS 4.0 across its networks, and also provides FWA services leveraging its 5G infrastructure – targeting rural and other areas underserved by traditional broadband."
