Since time immemorial, Native communities have passed down rich cultures, knowledge, traditions, and ways of life. But throughout our history, Native peoples' cultures, identities, and governments were not always seen as a part of this Nation but as a threat to it. Native people were pressured to assimilate, banned from practicing their traditions and sacred ceremonies, and forced from their homes and ancestral homelands. This violence and devastation cost countless lives, tore families apart, and caused lasting damage to Tribal communities and institutions. Despite centuries of violence and oppression, Native peoples remain resilient and proud. Today, Native Americans are essential to the fabric of the United States. They serve in the United States Armed Forces at higher rates than any other ethnic group. They continue to steward so many of our great lands. Their contributions to science, humanities, arts, public service, and more have brought prosperity for all of us. Their diverse cultures and communities continue to thrive and lead us forward. https://lnkd.in/e3tED3DS

[Whitehouse Proclamation] During National Native American Heritage Month, we recognize the invaluable contributions of Native peoples that have shaped our country and honor the hundreds of Tribal Nations who continue exercising their inherent sovereignty as vital members of the overlapping system of governments in the United States. We also recommit to supporting Tribal sovereignty; upholding the Federal Government’s solemn trust and treaty responsibilities; and working in partnership with Tribal Nations to advance prosperity, dignity, and safety for all Native peoples. Today marks two years since President Biden became the first U.S. president to formally commemorate Indigenous Peoples’ Day. Over a dozen states and more than 100 cities have followed suit, choosing to honor the rich cultures and histories of Indigenous communities, rather than celebrating Christopher Columbus. Many argue that Columbus brought genocide and colonization to communities that thrived in the Americas for thousands of years. While some still observe Columbus Day or Italian Heritage Day, it's crucial to acknowledge the pain and suffering caused by Columbus. However, there's more work to be done. Indigenous Peoples' Day is not yet a federal holiday, but progress is underway. Lawmakers in Congress have introduced legislation to make it one. Let's continue to advocate for this important step towards recognizing and respecting the rights and contributions of Indigenous peoples. Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day in the United States. According to the New York TImes, Indigenous Peoples' Day recognizes the Indigenous communities that have lived in the Americas for thousands of years and has become increasingly popular as a replacement for Columbus Day, which was meant to celebrate the explorer who sailed with a crew from Spain and began the colonization of the Americas in 1492. Native American people have been consistently oppressed, exploited, and excluded since Columbus' arrival. In the time since colonization began, Native people have been subjected to biological warfare, forced sterilization, and genocide—among other atrocities—at the hands of white colonizers. Ideas central to the American zeitgeist, like “manifest destiny,” are rooted in the erasure of Indigenous people and culture. It is important today and every day to work towards uprooting racist systems that perpetuate Indigenous exploitation and abuse. But beneath the island's surface lies a darker truth waiting to be unearthed. Annina van Neel, overseeing the construction of St. Helena's long-awaited airport, stumbles upon a discovery that will forever change the island's narrative. The excavation unearths the remains of thousands of enslaved Africans, a powerful testament to the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade. A Legacy of the Enslaved This discovery sparks a crucial conversation. Many islanders have ancestral ties to these enslaved people. The question becomes: how can they create a memorial that truly honors this tragic past and fosters reconciliation? Annina, determined to advocate for this unearthed legacy, seeks the expertise of Peggy King Jorde, an African American preservationist with a lifelong dedication to social justice. Together, they navigate the complexities of this sensitive issue, engaging with the islanders and exploring their own evolving understanding of the island's history. This documentary is a must-watch for anyone interested in: The lingering effects of colonialism and the slave trade The importance of historical preservation and ancestral connection Building a more inclusive and honest narrative about the past The power of collaboration and activism in fostering reconciliation This is more than just a historical discovery.
