Can you guess what this battered item is that our service technician, Ryan, is holding? It's a very old orifice plate in desperate need of replacement! An orifice plate, for those who may not know, is a critical part of stormwater control structure manholes, playing a crucial role in regulating and monitoring water flow. This specific plate had suffered structural damage and required replacing. A blocked or damaged orifice plate can lead to the stormwater manhole being overwhelmed with water, posing a serious flooding risk to the property.

This week marks 10 years since Letterkenny University Hospital (FKA Letterkenny General Hospital) was impacted by heavy flooding for the second consecutive year. As some might remember the new emergency department had only officially opened 4 months before torrential rain caused a flash flood which poured into the new building and submerged the car park. Our founder, Denis Sheridan had just sat down to dinner when his daughter showed him a video on social media of the flooding. He jumped in his suction tanker and went to the scene straight away and began pumping water alongside the emergency services on site. Within an hour the entire DS Environmental crew were onsite with 7 trucks and hundreds of meters of hosing removing thousands of gallons of water, debris and hazardous waste. While the crew worked tirelessly around the clock, the job had only begun as the pipework, electrical ducts and areas around storage tanks had to be drained, requiring DS' specially trained confined space team. Thankfully, as the hospital was an existing client, DS had detailed knowledge of the ducts and pipework and was able to remove a large quantity of contaminated water to a treatment plant in Dublin. It felt like a once in a lifetime flash flood but barely a year later DS got the call to return for a second flood at the same location. It's on days like this that the quality of crew and machinery shine through. When a utility company is spread out over an area as large as the state of California and is experiencing an unprecedented number of wildfires as they did in 2020, understanding what types of mitigation measures need to be taken and which contractors have actually done what they were asked to do is an important part of managing vegetation correctly.    Clear Path was asked to assemble a team of seasoned vegetation management professionals who gathered records on 23 wildfires. We put together a records reconciliation and validation system that allowed us to ensure that the records were available for all the work performed, that the work met the proper specifications, and that all records existed and were 100% accurate.    Records for each fire were then archived and available for retrieval when needed.     This allows decision-makers within the utility to know which contractors to deal with, what types of actions need to be taken to prevent further wildfires, and to answer questions from regulatory and legal entities looking to discover the causes and possible mitigation of some of these fires.    The electrical utility infrastructure had been significantly damaged, and there were hundreds of thousands of trees that needed to be mitigated because of fire damage to ensure that electrical service was restored and continued to operate safely.
