WELL-TO-DO. Thankfully, the images of pet-family units among the Black community are slowly becoming commonplace and normal. This is progress. 'Normal' wasn't always the case for images like these. This image, likely taken during the 1920-30s, depicts a dignified young Black man with his spitz. Although the exact origin of the photo isn't known, images of this time told an important story. This is more than a visual representation of a man and his species-diverse family member. The lens of the camera tells a story of status and class. Canine companionship was the megaphone through which African-Americans elevated their social status.
Dog ownership served as a cultural symbol of respectability for African Americans during the Jim Crow era. Not only did family dog portraits demonstrate pride and love for their species-different family members, it showed African-Americans claiming their place in society. Images like these implicitly stated that Blacks were upstanding citizens with similar values, tastes, and dreams. Or as Ebony magazine creator John H. Johnson stated, it was imperative to “show not only the Negroes, but also white people that Negroes got married, had beauty contests, gave parties, ran successful businesses, and did all the other normal things of life.” In short, these pictures said to the world "we made it".
As we celebrate Black History Month in 2024, it is tempting to feel that all images of Black pet-family units are normal. As we continue to fight stereotypes that Black communities are disinterested or incapable of having pets; as we recognize the contributions of Black community to animal welfare and pet ownership; and as we promote a sense of belonging within the pet community, especially for young Black children; we have a journey before we can truly say 'We've made it."
Happy Black History Month to All!! And if you have a Spitz in your family tell me what they are like.
