March is Endometriosis Awareness month and as it draws to a close, we are taking the opportunity to shed light on this condition. Endometriosis significantly impacts a woman’s physical, emotional, and social well-being, often disrupting daily life and relationships. Seeking support from healthcare providers, loved ones, and support groups is vital for managing its challenges. Here are some eye-opening facts: •⁠ ⁠Endometriosis is the 2nd most common gynaecological condition in the UK, affecting 1.5 million women. •⁠ ⁠It’s a chronic pain condition with no known cure and limited treatment options. Shockingly, it takes an average of 7.5 years from symptom onset to diagnosis. •⁠ ⁠Endometriosis is underfunded and under-researched, leaving many women waiting too long for consultations and surgery. Exciting developments are underway, with Chugai Pharma USA, Inc. and Biofourmis collaborating on measurement technology for endometriosis pain. Using an AI-based algorithm on Biofourmis’ platform, they’re developing an assessment of pain in patients with Endometriosis via a biosensor. In their newly published article, Dr. Eric Chu and Dr. Jamir Pitton Rissardo report: “Integrating chiropractic care with non-invasive modalities has been demonstrated to potentially benefit patients with TN, particularly when cervical pathology is present. In our new study, “Digital self-management, analgesic use and patient-reported outcomes in knee or hip osteoarthritis”, we explored changes in analgesic use and its associations with patient-reported outcomes among participants of a digital education and exercise therapy for knee and hip osteoarthritis (Joint Academy). Over a 12-week period, we observed a significant reduction in the proportion of participants on analgesic use, from 61.4% at baseline to 49.4% at follow-up. Participants who discontinued analgesic use (termed "quitters") reported the greatest improvements in patient-reported outcomes. This study underscores the potential of digital health solutions to enhance the management of osteoarthritis-related pain. 🔍 Understanding Muscle Tension Dysphagia: A Multidisciplinary Approach Muscle Tension Dysphagia (MTD) is a condition that many patients experience but is often undiagnosed or misattributed to other causes of dysphagia. MTD results from hypercontraction of the muscles in the throat, leading to difficulty swallowing, discomfort, and even voice changes. As ENT specialists, we know that addressing MTD requires more than just looking at structural abnormalities - it involves understanding the complex interplay between muscle function, stress, and patient habits. For our colleagues in primary care and other specialties, MTD may present subtly, often resembling GERD, LPR, or even anxiety-related symptoms. However, when patients describe tightness in the throat, difficulty swallowing, or a sensation of a lump in the throat (globus sensation) without obvious physician causes, MTD should be considered. Treatment often requires a collaborative approach, including: ✅Speech-language pathologists for vocal therapy and retraining muscle use. ✅Collaboration with gastroenterologists to rule out or manage any coexisting esophageal or reflux conditions. ✅Management of underlying anxiety or stress that may contribute to muscle tension. I encourage fellow physicians to consider MTD as part of the differential diagnosis for patients presenting with chronic throat discomfort and dysphagia. Early recognition and a multidisciplinary treatment approach can make a significant difference in patient outcomes.
