Owner, David&. I help founder-led companies communicate with clarity, so they can win in a world of Goliaths.
"Goosebumps, ever wondered what makes them?" So started the brand narrative I recently created for d&b audiotechnik, one of the world's leading makers of speaker systems (Sydney Opera House, Royal Albert Hall, Wembley Stadium, the Taylor Swift tour... it's a very long list). It's a simple question inspired by an off-hand story I heard about why the founders started out in the early 80s. I'm mentioning it because, in my experience, the reason a business started is the reason it still deserves to exist today. The human condition doesn't really change very quickly (find Bill Bernbach's 'unchanging man' quote). What does change is context. Cultural context is the glue that binds your product and your audience together. Many businesses just think about product and customer which is hard to make interesting. Triangulating with context brings it all to life, it clarifies your place in the world and people's lives. So, as a business, you need to figure out how the question you asked yourself when you started is relevant today. And I think that applies whether you're a bootstrapped start-up or a 43-year old mega-multi-million turnover organisation like d&b group. Turns out that goosebumps are a contortion of our 'fight of flight' response. Triggered by unexpected change and the more immersed in the moment we are, the more we feel them. Which is handy, because this brief was to communicate that d&b group are changing and creating more immersive experiences - so goosebumps all round then. Understand your founding truth and keep telling it. What's true is true. #founders #founderstory #clarity

Did you know that Whitebalance was founded over a shared passion for making creative work smoother and faster? It all started when Lorraine Ma, an award-winning filmmaker whose films have dazzled at Cannes and been picked up by VICE Media, joined forces with Hari Mohanraj, a tech wizard who helped build Shipt (later acquired by Target). In 2021, they teamed up to solve a simple but critical problem—how to make high-quality video and audio processing faster. One day, they demoed a prototype to an early investor: a Major League Baseball (MLB) team. The team liked what they saw, but they also pointed out something bigger—a pain point they faced every day: copyright infringement. It was one of those ‘aha’ moments. Lorraine and Hari realized that beyond speed, there was a chance to solve a much deeper issue affecting content creators everywhere. So, they got to work. Over the next few months, they asked a lot of questions, listened even more, and what started as a sleek prototype evolved into a full-fledged product. And that’s how Whitebalance was born. A tool designed to make life easier for creators by tackling copyright challenges head-on, so they can focus on what they do best: telling great stories. And this story is only just beginning... #ClearedForUse #TBT #StartUp #FoundersStory

Building something new always requires overcoming a perception gap, the space between where “most people” are and the opportunities available to them. There likely wouldn’t be an opportunity if that gap didn't exist. There is a perception gap between traditional entertainment executives and creators. On one side, too many in Hollywood think that creators need them more than they actually do, and are misapplying traditional media metrics to assess the promise (or perceived lack thereof) that certain creators can bring to their platform. On the other side, creators of a certain scale feel that traditional media is undervaluing them and that they should be getting more love and attention. Here’s the catch: Creators who feel underloved can return to making content and monetizing their brands through their social channels and, in many cases, make just as much, if not more, money doing that than diverting their time and attention to a project for a traditional media platform. I am also seeing creators willing to be more creative and flexible in how they approach a partnership with a traditional media platform. Traditional media executives with a misapplied mindset will eventually get to the right place because the market will demand it, particularly when a more forward-thinking peer successfully applies and executes the model. Unfortunately, they won’t be able to recover the lost opportunity cost of being too slow to adjust their paradigm. #EquityCrowdfunding #Creators #CreatorFinancing #CreatorEnterprise #CreatorMiddleClass #NewHollywood

I love being surrounded by interesting people doing interesting things. Here are some cool tools, platforms and businesses I've seen founders in my network building over the last few weeks (some music and some not): Jamalytics - A brand new platform that is looking to fuel the live sector by providing AI driven insights that connect artists and venues for profitable live performance opportunities 🎤 Choplife Gaming - an inevitably successful venture from the incredible Oluwatosin “ Mr Eazi ” Ajibade. A new online gaming platform which is taking online gaming to brand new markets 🧠 RepostExchange - A platform that helps artists build and reach new audiences natively on SoundCloud. If you're an independent artist, and SoundCloud is your platform of choice - this is the place to go! Benjamin Geyre's Lissen.Live - These guys are pre-launch but you can join the waitlist on their website. Ben is creating an interactive fan-to-artist experience, enhancing the interactions between fans and artists and generating more sustainable revenue streams for artists 🤝 indify - I recently discovered Indify and when I did, I thought this is cool! They match investment and marketing partners with artists and then facilitate an equitable investment in an artist. This gives the artist the best chance of success whilst maintaining their independence 👀 It's together we will solve the challenges that artists and consumers face, so let's bring each other up 🚀 #startups #newbusiness #innovation #creativesector
