Come January, the market will be flooded with candidates all jumping back in at the same time. Waiting until then could mean more competition and fewer opportunities to stand out. Should Companies Only Hire People Who Are Currently Working? Let's Talk! I’ve been thinking about something that's pretty controversial in the hiring world. Businesses who only look at candidates who are working.  I'm not so sure that's the best idea, and here's why. Sure, people who have jobs might seem like a safe bet because they're active in their roles and their skills are up to date. But here’s the thing—only considering folks who are employed could mean missing out on some amazing talent! There are loads of skilled professionals who might be out of work for reasons that have nothing to do with their abilities like — -- personal health -- company downsizing -- or taking time off to care for family. If we skip over these individuals, aren’t we losing out on unique perspectives and fresh ideas that could potentially shake things up and drive innovation at our companies? Plus, focusing only on those who are employed kind of feels like we’re not giving everyone a fair shot, doesn’t it? Could we be more inclusive and give everyone a chance to show what they can do? What if broadening our search could not only bring equity into the hiring process but also uncover hidden gems who could bring something new to our teams? What do you all think? Company: “We’re hiring; we’re People 1st, join us!” Me: “I interviewed 7X, drove to your office, wrote a paper, and then you ghosted me” Company: “Uhhhh….We are hiring, and have amazing snacks and nap pods in the office!” 🚩🚩🚩 Great company culture isn’t ping-pong tables, high-rises, free food, and nap pods. The ‘candidate experience’ is someone’s first exposure to how your company treats people. Prioritize it. What do you do when 398 people show up for a hiring blitz?? You roll up your sleeves and get to work. Last Saturday, HR partnered with the Department of Parks and Recreation for their annual hiring blitz in preparation for the seasonal summer hires. Our team ensured candidates were matched to the right requisitions and encouraged others to apply for open roles. We helped with applications, background paperwork, and onboarding. This wasn't just about hiring. It was about creating pathways for people. Sometimes, the best part of this work is knowing you helped someone take the next step towards their future. Company culture isn’t pool tables, huge Television, coffee machine, free food, and nap pods. The candidates' experience is their first exposure to how your company treats people. If your HR doesn't do that - you have to fix it. I remember a friend who gave it back to HR who rescheduled the interview 3 times. The friend said, "I am not interested in your company anymore.
