🗞 Electronic News! 🗞 Mercedes-Benz has recently inaugurated a cutting-edge competence centre dedicated to battery cells and new manufacturing processes with the aim of reducing battery costs by up to 30%. The eCampus facility, located in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim, is a significant addition to the company's development activities in battery technology, forming part of the substantial €14 billion investment Mercedes-Benz is making this year in research and development across its plants. The Industrial Cell Lab within the eCampus covers the entire spectrum of product and process chain related to cell development and production. This setup enables the cultivation of expertise for cost-effective manufacturing processes. Since 2017, the Testbeds have provided critical tools for startups, students, and researchers. Now, they’re unveiling a new 1,600-square-foot open-access lab designed to prototype custom pouch cell batteries. These batteries are key for electric vehicles, heavy trucking, and consumer electronics. Daniel Schwartz, founding director, highlights how this new lab fills a gap in battery R&D: "The nation is under-invested in battery engineering work." With $7.5M in state funding, this expansion will allow researchers to optimize battery designs in a hands-on way. Battery companies like Group14 Technologies, which raised $650M, are already leveraging these resources to build next-gen batteries. One of only five U.S. institutions, and six worldwide, Purdue University has been designated an overseas partnership institution for global technology cooperation by the Republic of Korea. The collaboration is set to foster and promote joint research and development opportunities in critical technology sectors. Martin Byung-Guk Jun, a professor in Purdue University Mechanical Engineering, will serve as director of #Purdue-Korea Center of Operation and Research for Industry Advancement (CORIA). He said the center will focus on three technology thrust areas critical for driving #innovation and discovery: #semiconductors, smart #batteries and future #mobility.
