Lately, I've noticed several women colleagues needing to take temporary breaks from their careers to care for ailing family members or young children. It prompted some reflection on a common phenomenon that many individuals, including those in the technology sector, can relate to: The decision to prioritize caregiving responsibilities( especially for children ) over professional aspirations.
This scenario resonates deeply with numerous professionals who find themselves at the crossroads of balancing professional aspirations with familial duties. It underscores the intricate dynamics within the modern workplace, where women grapple with the desire to excel in their careers while honoring their commitments to family.
The reality is that during a hiatus of 3-4 years, technology often advances significantly, making the prospect of returning to the workforce daunting. Many employers offer return-to-workforce programs, providing opportunities to re-enter the workforce after a hiatus. However, perhaps a more effective approach lies in creating environments that provide sufficient support for individuals to remain in the workforce facilitating continuous professional development and skill retention.
Innovative skill retention might include:
