#Reflection In the world of social impact, there’s an unspoken challenge that many of us in the nonprofit sector face but rarely discuss: competition. It’s an irony that in a field dedicated to collaboration and community, the pressure to compete can sometimes overshadow the very values we stand for. At Garden of Hope Foundation , we’ve seen how this competitive mindset can creep in—whether it’s competing for funding, visibility, or even clients. . The reality is that resources are often limited, and the drive to sustain our missions can lead to a sense of "rivalry" among organizations. We launched our Changemakers program 3 months ago with the aim of fostering collaboration over competition. 15 organizations came together to find different ways of working together. Since then, these amazing changemakers have directly impacted the live of 1,000 people with no repeat client getting the same service or product from 2 or more organizations (The power of data sharing) . Board Governance & Cultural Humility The Role of Cultural Humility in Fostering Long-Term Success for Nonprofit Organizations Thursday, May 30, from 1 PM to 2:30 PM (Virtual) | $25-$45 This session will explore how cultural humility is crucial for board governance in the longevity of a nonprofit's success by exploring the difference between #cultural_competency and #cultural_humility and sharing how nonprofit boards can navigate cultural dynamics through empathy. We will also discuss cultural arrogance, centering voices, representation -- do we have representation just for representation's sake? -- and application for cultural humility for long-term success. Objectives Clarify the distinction between cultural competency and cultural humility. Identify whose voices are being centered and whose voices may be excluded in board discussions and decision-making. Encourage participants to apply cultural humility principles within their board roles for more impactful and sustainable governance.

Can we get to “better” while leaving the status quo intact?  ABSOLUTELY NOT. One of the greatest impediments to a successful organizational equity journey is an inability or unwillingness to contend with its intended function. Let’s be honest - the function of the average corporation is to amass wealth. And let’s be honest - the function of the average nonprofit organization is to help but not in a manner that empowers people or permanently resolves an issue. I’ll tell you another time why nonprofits exist in the first place… To truly make a difference, organizations must first contend with their FUNCTION and only after that, with their FORM. Sometimes, when we look closely, we don’t like what we see because it compels us to do something differently; to intentionally put cracks in the status quo. As bell hooks reminds us, we must "confront and accept dispersal, fragmentation as part of the construction of a new world order." Conflict avoidance is a plague to nonprofit workplaces. Conflict avoidance gets in the way of productivity, stifles innovation, and corrodes trust among team members. When issues are overlooked or dismissed instead of being tackled head-on, they escalate and fester, creating an atmosphere of tension and resentment. In a sector dedicated to social change and impact, fear of conflict impedes progress and undermines the organization's mission. Culture is top-down so it is imperative for nonprofit leaders recognize the critical importance of fostering a conflict brave culture. Only then can nonprofits truly maximize their potential as catalysts for positive change in the world. #conflictbravery

They say your network is your net worth. Then how do you get rich? By raising social capital. Here’s how. Raising social capital with people means making deposits of goodwill and kindness. It requires being generous with your time, knowledge, and assistance, connecting with people on a human level, and going above and beyond whenever you can. Keep in mind that building social capital is not about you but about others. In this week’s edition of The Caring Techie newsletter, I shared how to achieve that. These are the frameworks I’ve discovered and created to build trust (homage to Jim Langley) Building Trust: The Secret Sauce 1. McKinsey Trust Model: Perceived reliability, intimacy, competence => good. Perceived self-interest => bad 2. Trust shift: Institutions to peers, often via tech platforms 3. Time factor: 3 years of consistency builds significant trust. Hard for CFOs to stomach 4. Trust-building comms: Share details, use 3rd party endorsements & testimonials Quickest ways to build trust: 5. Community building: Purposeful, participatory, recurring gatherings; identify volunteer leaders 6. Provide value to donors: Value can be informational, social, professional, identity reinforcement (think creatively!) I often see these fail in established (institutionalized) nonprofits. I less often see the leadership backbone (at the top or within) needed to push through and commit to the necessary changes.
