🥹🎉 Celebrating my first year with a company that was once on my BHAG list calls for story time. TW: immense gratitude and a *little sap. When I first moved to San Diego NYE 2021, I was broke, jobless (sort of) and living for free with family and friends. Note: I say sort of because I had tried to start my own fitness business, but had no clue how to get it off the ground. I had no other choice but to hustle. Freelanced podcasting, worked on my little fit biz, whatever I could do to bring in $500 here or there. But it definitely wasn’t enough. I took a call with a long time friend and colleague of my mom’s (Irene McCormick, MS - if you didn’t know), who’s reputation in the industry is so powerful, I shook with anticipation as the connecting zoom call jingled in the background. Fabio Comana was honest and brief. He told me the industry was suffering post-COVID, despite the numerous fitness businesses headquartered in San Diego. He said there might be opportunities at a place like IDEA Health & Fitness Association, but hardly anyone was hiring. I took a deep breath. Never did I think that I was good enough, talented enough, or smart enough to get a job at IDEA. I checked for job listings on LinkedIn anyway…. Nothing. I tucked the BHAG away. For another year, I kept going. I kept hustling. I started a magazine that never made it to print, took a job as a Sales Associate at Orangetheory Fitness, worked my way to becoming an Assistant Studio Manager, and had the pleasure and honor of being a part of the team that opened the first downtown San Diego studio in the East Village. Then at Health & Fitness Association (formerly IHRSA) 2023, I met a few members of the IDEA team, who said they were looking for content creators, podcasters, and writers. I raised my hand immediately! I could do it all. About a week later, I got an email. IDEA was looking for a full-time, remote Marketing Coordinator. They would pay me more than I was making at OTF, and I could work from home. Was I dreaming? My big, hairy, audacious goal was at my fingertips. The rest is 365 and some odd days of history. In my first year, I’ve been promoted from Marketing Coordinator to Digital Marketing Manager, and I’m now running the show in marketing and PR (with a LOT of help from the team). The experiences I’ve had and people I’ve met this year have taught me something new each time, and I can’t believe I GET to work for such an inspiring company. Preparing for 2023 and 2024 IDEA World, the greatest show in the industry, working on initiatives to strengthen our membership base, learning to sell health & liability insurance, the list goes on. Another thing I love about London is the classes and food it provides access too and what that can do for companies based there. When I went to Battersea the other weekend I walked past a reformer studio and have been so tempted to book a class and do it (getting up to London on the train is quite expensive so haven't got round to it yet). I love how accessible health and wellness is, people running and walking the beautiful parks, whole food stores and juice bars everywhere. What I love more is companies that are based in these areas utilise that to make the workspace and healthy and happy environment for there staff and I think that is so important. Doing things like MCR Marketers did below brings the company together outside of work which can really improve not only your works happiness because you get to know and like the people you work with but also the respect colleagues have for each other. This then leads to better results in whatever you do because you know what you do is valued and makes a difference not only with what you do but for the company so you continue to work hard and know your respected when something isn't going your way and you need a moment to recuperate or resolve in another way and have the space to do that. London brings out the best in people (and has the best stores to treat yourself too, coffee, cake, takeaway the lot)

What a weekend! A massive thanks to Lauren Ridgewell and Embrace Wellness Studio for welcoming us to the Reformer and Yap social! It was great to meet and chat with marketers in a similar position and hear about their own journeys and personal projects 🤩 One thing that stood out to me after the session was that out of all the many introductions that were made, the most memorable, were the ones where we spoke about how we think as marketers rather than the jobs we do. An idea only becomes an idea once it challenges the status quo. That’s how we developed a new idea with Equinox: Forbid people from buying new gym memberships on January 1, traditionally the most important membership sign up day of the year. That was the message of the “WE DON’T SPEAK JANUARY” campaign, which appeared in newspapers, online and outdoor for the first time in 2023. The campaign tells everyone that Equinox would not allow membership purchases on the first of the year. Historically, the 70% of people who do sign up for gyms in January often do so out of guilt and, more often, cease gym visits within a few weeks. Equinox wants the committed. Of those who have signed up for Equinox, 95% are still members a year later and have an average of 2.8 visits per week. A campaign about Equinox’s commitment to its belief of “commitment,” helped Equinox break all kinds of records: - 504% increase in brand conversation. - 2.4 Billion earned media impressions. - Record traffic to website: 52% above its benchmark for the first week of January—setting a new record for the most visits in seven days. - Best ever January in terms of sales and leads. Up ~25% in the month-to-date when compared to the previous best January. And everyone took notice—the campaign is now taught as a case study at a leading MBA program.
