Week 4 post-acquisition - let's build! This is the time to begin making real improvements in the way your data is organized and reported. Ask yourself questions like: "What are my current financial statements NOT telling me?" "What could help me run my business better if I had xyz datapoint reported?" Work backwards to figure out what changes in systems, structure and process are needed in the accounting to get there. Work with your existing accounting & finance team or bring in an outside professional ( 😉 ) who has experience addressing these needs to give you some additional perspective. They may be aware of systems/tools/processes that your existing accounting team doesn't know about (otherwise they probably would have implemented them). Figure out what data needs to be reported via 'click of the button' vs. can be done ad-hoc with a couple extra steps. Resist the urge to build every nook and cranny detail into your P&L and Balance sheet and overcomplicate it. Simple as possible + complex as necessary. If your financial statements require multiple mouse-wheel scrolls, you probably need to simplify. What non-financial data do you need to incorporate to give you a more wholistic view of your operations? Miles driven / contracts signed / units sold / etc.. Where are you going to get that data? Just because it doesn't touch your general ledger doesn't mean it shouldn't be included in your accounting/finance ecosystem. Use these metrics to understand unit-level revenue/expenses, and other activity-based drivers.
