RE:duce is one of the three pillars within Swegon’s RE:3 framework. RE:duce means that we are reducing the use of materials containing substantial levels of embodied carbon in our products. By changing traditional steel used in the CLA to a steel with lower levels of embodied carbon, we have lowered the carbon footprint by 34% (compared to our traditional CLA). I am in agreement with the formulation you outline of the barriers to industrial electrification. I, however, see the barriers as stemming primarily from factors that are: economic, plant utilities’ management and cost control, federal and state public utilities regulatory policies, and federal and state industrial and economic policies. While technology and infrastructure are critical, they do not act as main barriers to entry. This is based on studies I have done on decarbonization technologies field work in particularly the oil and gas and steel industries. I hope the following brief bullets illustrate my point: ·       Economic o  A major factor in the adoption of industrial electrification is the spark gap – price of electricity to gas and other fossil fuels but also H2 and bioenergy. o  A second factor is the capital cost associated with electrification particularly that of fired heaters – industrial heat pump, other. o  Rules on electricity pricing and costing of electricity services as well as captive power: § Industrial electricity rate structure § Backup power rates § Rates governing industrial generated power sales to the grid § Captive power rules: access to the grid, backup power, off-system sales o  Security of meeting additional industrial power requirements ·       Plant utilities’ management and cost control: o  Costs associated with meeting emission-reduction goals o  Financial instruments: transfer prices (internal), Carbon price (internal and market), and Cap and trade (market) o  In depth understanding of plant energy consumption, emissions, and cost at the corporate, plant, and process level o  Corporate utilities procurement and accountability for energy consumption and cost at corporate, plant, and process level o  Mechanism for evaluation and financing of corporate utilities projects independent of corporate hurdle rate  o  Financial mechanisms used for implementing climate-related initiatives. ·       Federal and state public utilities regulatory policies o  Lag in review and update of access to the grid, industrial electricity rates and services, backup power, and distributed generation impacting decarbonization and industrial plant electrification     ·       Federal and state industrial and economic policies o  Lag at both federal and state levels in integrating industrial and economic policies in the development of climate action plans #energy #oilgas #governance #corporategovernance #Decarbonisation #industrialenergy Julio Friedmann Ben Cahill Jason Bordoff
