Manager of Allia Future Homes. Creating new Supported Modular Home Communities for people formerly homeless >see our short YouTube film< Planner trainer & previous Cambridge City Leader, building lots more council homes.
Birmingham residents in particular, and the current council, are suffering massive service cuts due to past often officer and finance failings, and some historic member leadership failings too. Like the inane effort to ignore spiralling cumulative equal play claim debts owed to 1000s of women in jobs fully deserving the same pay. But John Cotton and all in Birmingham deserve far better from our Government who have starved all councils of fair funding and also demonstrate continuous political bias. Birmingham never undertook any of the reckless financial gambles of the tiny no of councils in the naughty corner - Thurrock, Croydon, Slough and several Surrey councils - err Michael Gove's home county, In any sane world, Birmingham would have been allowed a ten year plan to repay its debts, and the borrowing freedom to make proven investments in partnerships developing its extensive land and assets. That would make the a huge difference in closing the debt gap. Instead, they're being forced by Government to sack people, shred services and sell off the council's hugely valuable and affordable housing development council assets at knock down prices. Not necessary - short sighted. Damaging the city and its residents for decades to come not just years. Birmingham and its new and committed Council Leader and Deputy Leader - John Cotton and Sharon Thompson, JP and the city's impressive new officer leadership deserve the option NOW from DLUHC DLUHC to create their own FAR BETTER new long financing and spend balancing term plan. And DLUHC should fair fund, and treat all councils as equals, not inferior minions.
If you want the local state to function properly, you have to fund it properly. Here's Core Cities UK cabinet member John Cotton, Leader of Birmingham City Council, on why it's time to press the reset button and make the case for sustainable finance to national politicians. https://lnkd.in/eHcPwmxM

Reform of the international financial architecture is one of the most important topics in global governance. It is not new that the establishment of the Bretton Woods institutions did not bring the voices of Global South countries to the table, and therefore are governed by unequal policies creating debt constraints mostly for low-income countries. Over time, Global South advocates and countries have become more vocal, coming up with initiatives to address the challenges created by the global political economy. The Bridgetown Initiative is one of them. I had the opportunity to work together with my team within the Global South Project on this piece, which summarizes the challenges identified and the experiences of the Bridgetown Initiative. #Globalgocernance #IFAReform

Rt Hon Rachel Reeves is set to prioritise construction and house building at the heart of the plan for economic growth. “Fixing the foundations” is absolutely welcome. It is also nice rhetoric but we must “underpin” this with “sustainability.” What we build today, shapes our existence tomorrow. Let’s get this right. 🏡 🏗️ ⚡️🌳 🪵 #sustainabilityleadership SDG 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14 & 15

"... "get Britain building again" by bringing back compulsory housebuilding targets as part of a wide-ranging plan to reboot the UK economy." Get Britain building, why not the whole of the UK. Kind of reminded me of 'build back better', just without the better, hopefully this will all be for the better though. "... would overhaul planning restrictions and end the effective ban on onshore wind farms in England in order to speed up national infrastructure projects." There was no effective ban, was there. Thought it was just if objections were raised that could not be addressed, then the planning proposals could be refused. Wonder what objections were effective in leading to refusals. Might be relevant for the public to be made aware of any/all of the concerns that could impact them adversely, or at least the issues that prevented some developments from going ahead ... 🧐 #thinkingaboutthings #justanotherthought #thinkingdifferently #onebigchocolateeg #beavoice #beanecho #dotherightthing #stopthespread #dowehavetolivewithit #circular #donotstareatgoats #whatdoyouthink #wonderlust #wanderlust #wherediditcomefrom #whoknows #cananyonehelp #donotgowiththeflow #dejavu #onebigchocolateegg https://lnkd.in/eZc8RGcM

Building, acquiring and preserving: Putting our money to work Our CEO Tracee Smith is joining a panel at next week’s National Housing Conference in Ottawa, talking about building, acquiring and preserving the housing that Canada desperately needs - including through innovative, Indigenous-focused financing and investment approaches like ours. It will be a wide-ranging discussion of how investors - from institutions to individuals - can be part of the solution to Canada’s housing crisis. Have questions or thoughts on this topic? Share them here, get in touch, or drop by the panel if you’re attending the conference. This is an issue that can only be solved if we innovate and collaborate across investment and housing, so let’s talk.

Today the newly appointed Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, delivered her first speech in which she promised to 'get Britain building again' by proposing immediate changes to the planning system. These include a reform of the NPPF (including restoring mandatory housing targets) to build the 1.5 million homes Labour promises over the course of this Parliament, as well as an end to the ban on new onshore windfarms in England (which was brought in by the Conservatives in 2015). Whilst there will no doubt be challenges ahead (including issues surrounding deliverability due to the lack of a skilled workforce) such clear and decisive action should be welcome news to those of us in the world of planning. I have personally spent my entire career under a Tory Government (having begun my training contract in 2011). I've 'seen it all' - the death of onshore wind, countless publications of the NPPF, 16 housing minsters and 5 Prime Minsters! It's certainly been an eventful (if not at times frustrating!) time, but surely (whatever your overall political stance) this new, fresh approach to planning is just what the industry needs? The Government is finally prioritising planning reform and encouraging stability and growth and I, for one, am excited about the next chapter #rebuildBritain #planningreform #notimetowaste Shakespeare Martineau, Anna Cartledge, Paul Wakefield, Simon Stanion, Kylie Wesson, Julie Russell, Josh Morley, Jack Randall-Barsby, Yasmin S.

Small businesses make up an important segment of our membership and these tax changes are affecting them in many ways. Educate yourself on this topic and join the conversation.
Important meeting alert! 🚨 Montana Wilson EMBA, M.Eng, P.Eng, PMP, CEO and founder of ACEC-member firm and a past Board member, met with MP Jasraj Singh Hallan, and Conservative Finance Critic/Shadow Minister, to discuss the potential impacts of the proposed capital gains tax changes on small businesses. These changes could significantly affect employee-owned firms like Grit Engineering, which play a crucial role in supporting the Canadian economy and ensuring the successful delivery of federal infrastructure programs. At ACEC-Canada, we're committed to advocating on behalf of our members, and we'll continue to voice our concerns to the federal government. These changes must not hinder the growth and stability of the firms that keep Canada’s infrastructure strong! #Advocacy #SmallBusiness #CapitalGains #Infrastructure #ACECCanada

"A national mission" "No time to waste" "Elected on a mandate to get things done and get Britain building" It’s been a while since I’ve felt ‘excited’ by our current planning system. But listening to Rachel Reeves this morning has restoked the fire for the role planning can play in delivering growth. 72 hours in and already 6 points of action declared with more to follow, not least changes to the NPPF to bring back mandatory housebuilding targets, removing the ban for onshore wind, a big focus on infrastructure (including energy and housing) and intervention from the Deputy PM to ensure opportunities for investment are not missed or inhibited (with 2x data centre appeals already recovered). Yes, I’m sure there will be challenges and hurdles (when isn't there?) but for the first time, in a long time, it feels like we could be heading in the right direction. Rachel Reeves statement is well worth a watch. #planning #housing #development #yimby #election #reform #mission https://lnkd.in/equb2X8G
