Simon Willison 's term “imitation intelligence” is such a great way to think about LLMs and generative AI. If we remember that models *appear* intelligent through token prediction and aren’t actually “smart” (yet?), we'll be better users. It's a useful framing for both their capabilities and limits. It’s often said about AI, especially large language models (LLMs), that “it doesn’t generate new ideas; it’s not truly creative.” I’m not so sure. When I prompt the #Cursor AI IDE, it returns code that others have written in different contexts. By iteratively merging multiple snippets with my own ideas to build LLM-powered applications, it certainly feels like a form of creation to me. In the end, it’s all about semantics.
