As Amazon seeks to narrow the gap with Walmart in the grocery sector, both retail giants are emphasizing their private-label brands to attract consumers. Walmart recently launched its largest private-brand food initiative in two decades, introducing budget-friendly, "chef-inspired" products. Meanwhile, despite scaling back its private-label offerings in other categories, Amazon is expanding its selection on grocery as a critical area for growth. With the battle for consumer loyalty intensifying, especially as shoppers adjust their habits in response to inflation, exploring the strategic moves of these two companies in this competitive space can offer valuable insights. Innovations in the grocery sector continue, making grocery shopping easier, faster, and more affordable. This is a good example of one innovation: Amazon is piloting a grocery subscription service in three cities. The subscription offers unlimited grocery delivery on orders over $35 to Amazon Fresh and Whole Foods Market, alongside unlimited 30-minute pickup for orders of any size. It will be interesting to see what advancements in grocery convenience are introduced in 2024. #Grocery #Retail #B2C #Innovation

Amazon's grocery journey has lately focused a lot on the halting, underwhelming progress of Amazon Fresh stores. But this news is a reminder about the online scale + operational advantages the company can flex as part of its multi-pronged approach. Yesterday, Amazon announced it's testing out ways to combine its food and non-food assortment into orders. The company has said in the past that one of the biggest headaches its shoppers face is the need to build separate carts for its separate businesses. It's focused on breaking down those barriers and offering more of a one-stop online shop that millions of people still value in supermarkets, club stores, Walmart and other outlets. Amazon is going to keep flexing its scale and e-comm advantages in grocery. What it lacks in store merchandising acumen (at least so far), it can compensate with pure operational muscle. Amazon is expanding its brand portfolio with the launch of Amazon Saver, a budget-friendly line offering groceries and household essentials under $5 to compete directly with Walmart, Target, and ALDI USA. This strategic move is all about capturing the price-conscious segment, reinforcing Amazon’s ability to cater to a diverse range of consumers while strengthening its position in the market. By layering this brand into their existing portfolio and offering exclusive discounts for Prime members, Amazon continues to diversify its offerings and appeal to different customer bases. It’s a smart play in balancing premium and budget brands to stay ahead of competitors. Curious about how Amazon’s reshaping the grocery market? Here’s an interesting piece from Sam Silverstein in Retail Dive on a new venture to “build a best-in-class grocery shopping experience”. 🛒 Amazon is piloting a grocery subscription service that offers unlimited free delivery and pickup in three US cities. The goal is to make its food offering a byword for value and convenience – and extend what it calls the “one Amazon relationship”. The retailer has acknowledged that bricks-and-mortar Amazon Fresh stores haven’t resonated with customers as well as expected. So, it will be interesting to see if this updated approach to grocery CX tempts consumers away from more-established competitors in the sector.💡 #Amazon #CustomerExperience #Retail #Innovation

Amazon launched a budget-friendly grocery brand. Amazon Saver, the e-commerce giant’s answer to private-label food brands from rivals Walmart and Target, will eventually feature more than 100 items—most of which cost less than $5. The company already has grocery brands, but the “no-frills” Saver is the cheapest. Amid inflation, cash-strapped shoppers increasingly abandoned premium brands for low-budget options like Target’s Good & Gather, though Amazon hadn’t yet joined the fray until now. Prime members will get an additional 10% off Saver products. https://lnkd.in/e8t2YkHN
