The Eurovision Song Contest is over for another year, but let's not overlook the vital role of music education in nurturing musical talent and shaping vibrant music industries. The success of the Swedish music industry is often attributed to a strong foundation in music education. Here in the UK recent survey data suggests that almost a quarter of secondary schools are falling short of meeting the government's expectation of an hour of classroom music each week for Key Stage 3. A Teacher Tapp survey of senior leaders in state secondary schools revealed that 16% teach music for less than an hour a week. Additionally, 2% do not offer music lessons and, 5% utilise a "carousel" system. This often results in teaching music for only part of the year. The role of music teachers has never been so important. #MusicEducation #KeyStage3 #UKSchools

Percussionist/Drummer/Composer/Editor. Musical Director of Panorama Brasil. Ensemble Director and Instrumental Teacher at Monash University
A significant number of music graduates go into one-on-one instrumental teaching: are we adequately preparing those students for the application processes used by so many schools? Having helped a number of young teachers over recent years, it seems to me that there are significant gaps - some common to any job application, some music specific. What are your experiences with this, be it as a Head of Music, experienced teacher, or recent graduate?

https://lnkd.in/gsdyzeAY YES!! A very very long time coming but a step in the right direction. 1. Children can learn the mechanics and logistics of what goes into a live music performance, and how much time, work, and money are invested into the preparation and execution of a live music performance. 2. Children develop their ears. Music requires your ears. Basically. Without your ears, you wouldn't know how to appreciate music. 3. These experiences will shape a child's expectations of and experience in music lessons. 4. Music schools and private music teachers, where possible, should follow MOE's lead, and take their students out to concerts. 5. Remember the Leonard Bernstein TV show which he had for kids? We can do something like that here. Whether it be on TV or YouTube, or some other platform. 6. I hope the number can increase from 12,000 students over time if the program is successful.

I see this in both my professional and personal life. Music can be the intervention that strengthens, regulates, opens up the possibility’s of empathy, a sense of community, raises self esteem and can open up emotional dialogue. In my own opinion these musical interventions should be available within SEND and main stream settings for all SEND students, including neurodivergence. An example of this is scientifically studied on the Clem Burke Drumming Project. https://lnkd.in/gimGqidp
