🤖 When the perspectives of roboticists and people with disabilities merge, innovative solutions emerge. Futurity reports that sidewalk robots are being developed to perform extra services like shoveling snow and acting as crossing guards while carrying out their primary tasks in delivery. By incorporating accessibility needs into the design process, these robots aim to enhance public spaces and ensure technology serves all community members effectively. 🌟 #Accessibility #Robotics #Innovation #DisabilityInclusion #Futurity

Guide dogs are incredibly helpful for visually impaired people, but also rare. Enter robot dogs. But even as this technology develops, new research points out one critical step: ask users what they need first! “We’re not the first ones to develop guide-dog robots,” says Donghyun Kim, assistant professor in the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences, UMass Amherst. "Before we develop the technology, we understand how they use the animal guide dog and what technology they are waiting for.” That's why Kim and his lab interviewed 23 guide dog handlers and five trainers in the course of developing a better guide dog robot. Takeaways from this landmark work included the need for a two-hour battery, more cameras to help the handler avoid overhead objects, and a robot less like a self-driving car and more like an obstacle avoidance system. The research that Kim and his lab derived from their 2,000 minutes of audio and 240 minutes of video data won the Best Paper Award at CHI 2024: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, the leading venue for human-computer interaction research. #robotics #ai #accessibility #umass #umassamherst #computing #robot #robots https://lnkd.in/ejHXwQmF
