Meddling with the microbiota: Fungal tricks to infect plant hosts (OA) https://botany.fyi/h319x8 Plants associate with a wealth of microbes, collectively referred to as the plant microbiota, whose composition is determined by host plant genetics, immune responses, environmental factors and intermicrobial relations. Unsurprisingly, microbiota compositions change during disease development. Recent evidence revealed that some of these changes can be attributed to effector proteins with antimicrobial activities that are secreted by plant pathogens to manipulate host microbiota to their advantage. #Botany #PlantScience

Genomic basis of the distinct biosynthesis of β-glucogallin, a biochemical marker for hydrolyzable tannin production, in three oak species ($) Hydrolyzable tannins (HTs), predominant polyphenols in oaks, are widely used in grape wine aging, feed additives, and human healthcare. However, the limited availability of a high-quality reference genome of oaks greatly hampered the recognition of the mechanism of HT biosynthesis. Yang et al generated high-quality reference genomes of three Asian oak species (Quercus variabilis, Quercus aliena, and Quercus dentata) that have different HT content. #Botany

Fun Fact: The Mushroom that Bleeds an Anticoagulant 👽 The Bleeding Tooth Fungus (Hydnellum peckii) exudes a red, blood-like fluid through its pores, which contains anticoagulant properties. It is also commonly called Strawberries and Cream. While this fungus looks unusual, it is not considered edible due to its bitter taste and tough texture. The Bleeding Tooth Fungus is found in North American and European forests, often growing in symbiosis with trees by forming mycorrhizal relationships with their roots. The vivid red fluid is rich in a compound known as atromentin, which has shown potential for blood-thinning effects similar to heparin, a common anticoagulant used in medicine. Studies have also highlighted atromentin’s antioxidant and antimicrobial activities, making the fluid of interest for various biomedical applications. The striking blood-like appearance combined with its pharmacological properties has sparked scientific interest in its potential as a natural source of novel therapeutics for cardiovascular conditions. #Ethnobotany #botany #Fungus #Anticoagulant #blood

🚀 Phenomenal News Alert! 🚀 I'm overjoyed to share a monumental achievement: my abstract, recently spotlighted in an oral presentation at the Genetics, Genomics, and Bioinformatics section of the ASAS Midwest Annual Meeting, has now been officially published in the illustrious Journal of Animal Science! 🌟 Witnessing my research journey culminate in print and having the privilege to present it to the esteemed audience at the conference has been an absolute highlight of my career. Titled "Oral and Rumen Microbiome Characterization to Predict Host Phenotypes," our study utilized cutting-edge 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing to unravel the intricate bacterial community structures in both the oral and rumen environments over time. We then boldly compared these microbiomes to ascertain the oral microbes' efficacy as proxies for rumen microbiome. Furthermore, we pioneered in predicting microbiability estimates for these ecosystems, unlocking invaluable insights into microbiome dynamics and rumen microbial ecology. Heartfelt gratitude goes out to my mentors, collaborators, and the ASAS committee for their unwavering support and belief in this research endeavor. https://lnkd.in/giKRPQdq I extend a warm invitation to all to dive into the published abstract, engage in discourse, and together, let's propel our collective understanding, foster innovation, and continue making profound strides in our field! 🌱💡 #ASASMidwest #AnimalScience #Genetics #Genomics #Bioinformatics #Research #Innovation #JournalPublication

Happy to announce our most recent publication in an issue I have always been curious about and finally was concluded (at least one fragment of that). A special thanks to Morgana Contini who greatly helped with the manuscript writing. In this study, we demonstrated the relationship between the predominant diet and the endocrine pancreas apparatus from four bat species.
