Yesterday I was back from the run. I was keeping my phone for the charging. By chance, I saw that linkedin Audio live and in progress.ย Title- Testing Jobs - What's Wrong? By Brijesh DEB. I felt as if I was entering an ongoing class of my favourite professor. I saw some of the familiar faces and, yes, a few of the friends. I am practising "listening" these days (after realizing that listening is a very important skill), so I joined with the intent of just listening. The discussion was so engaging that I also participated in it. Now I want to summarise as follows: 1/ Interviews are not interrogations. Preparations need to be done from both sides.ย 2/ Test Managers/hiring managers need to optimise the JD.ย 3/ Pushback - How, why and when to - Pointers made by Rahul Parwal were interesting. 4/ By the time I joined Mahathee was already in Listening mode!ย 5/ Unrealistic expectations for a junior testerย 6/ Interviews not showoffs of an interviewer's skills; unfortunately this practice still exists 7/ How many times, the hiring manager has briefed about the role/project/expectations before starting the interview? This will help to set the expectations from both sides. 8/ How does a tester ninja conduct/attend an interview? (my imagination)! 9/ (This was a little scary personally) Interviews only through referralsย 10/ Some of the scenarios where using the same resume without going through JD reduces the chances of getting the call | not preparing about what has been mentioned in resume 11/ Building PORTFOLIO as a tester demonstrating work Rahul Parwal (I too have not done this, it is a work in progress...) 12/ It was a lively class...; Prof was happy; students are happy; now the actual work begins... 07092024 ------- ------- update on 09092024 <Few more pointers> 13/ Upskilling is inevitable for testers.(for anyone who chose to grow) 14/ Tester with Unique skills; there is always a demand for good testers. 15/ Take the competition by stride 16/ Study/upskilling is the way of life. Please don't consider upskilling ONLY for interviews as it will become evident. Please feel free to add your thoughts/notes Thank you A "Happy" Software Tester ๐

"Don't give me fish, Teach me how to fish." With this quote, dear LinkedIn family, I need your #expert #help to assist a fellow #tester who messaged me and asked โcan you refer me to testing?โ. I, after thanking the person for approaching, asked 'Are you looking for a job and asking can I refer your profile to someone to hire you for a job in software testing?โ The answer came as 'Yes' and with a request to share my email-id AND this is where the idea of this post originated because I saw a curiosity, humbleness, courage and authority in the question and I asked myself, 1. How can I assist? 2. How to respond? 3. How can I leverage the collective expertise of the software testing community? Now, after quickly assessing her current LinkedIn profile and evaluating what resources I have access to, I suggested her to be 1. Visible 2. Prepare 3. Upskill 4. Network 5. Share I recommended following To-Do's 1. Listen to Dhairya Gangwani talk at https://lnkd.in/g8htzFS6 and and be better visible on LinkedIn. If required, use the instructions given at https://lnkd.in/gUdxkf_x AND 2. As you take above steps, let's talk for 15 minutes and help me understand by sharing updated details on, a. What are you good and very good at in terms of Testing Skills, Communication, Tools and Techniques and Types of Testing? b. What job profile, domain, location and package (range) are you looking for? 3. Attach / share your most updated resume in 2 pages pdf file.ย Tip: Start building a resume using LinkedInโs resume building feature. https://lnkd.in/gSAjjyRy In parallel or concurrently... 4. Listen to Ashutosh Garg on Salary Negotiations https://lnkd.in/g9iyqcuW 5. Start preparing for technical interviews and listen to Ben Dowen at https://lnkd.in/ghCuQy3x 6. Start joining communities including The Test Tribe, Ministry of Testing - Software Testing, QA & Quality Engineering Community, The Test Chat, and TAQELAH SINGAPORE to name a few. These communities can definitely be a brilliant source of valuable information, knowledge building, connection, motivation and directions for you. 7. Join TTT Discord @ https://lnkd.in/g4HkjnmX and also start following / connecting with some of my connections who are smart thinkers, expert testers and testing leaders. DM me with what connections you choose and why? 8. Last but not the least, since you are looking for #change, you should be futuristic and attend #QonfX on 20th April and know what your next job may look like. Register here: https://lnkd.in/gyWCXzFE Request to community: To help this fellow tester (name not disclosed for privacy reasons and common sense) please come forward and suggest equivalent and even more powerful solutions / references when you choose to respond.

I responded to a question on Quora - "How can I study the Selenium testing tool? What are the requirements? I am a fresher." Since much of my answer is relevant to many beginners in testing - Posting it here. ----------- I strongly suggest not to go this path. As fresher, I guess you are not proficient in either testing, nor programming. Selenium (it is not a testing tool - it is a framework for running GUI level automated test cases for web browser) requires knowledge in both programming and testing - you do not have both ... as of now. Anyone who is claiming to teach selenium to anyone without programming and testing background is telling a lie and marketing wrong thing. Getting trained in Selenium is like a carpenter learning how to use hammer or saw. Its a tool - you should know broader carpenter tasks. That takes time. These days - freshers want to job - take some selenium training - somehow get a jog and get stuck as they know only say how to use hammer - company hired them as full time expert carpenter. Then job losses happen, people blame on company. Here is my sincere advise to freshers who want to get into software โ 1. Do not take training in any XYZ for say 3 months and expect job. even if you get one, it will be short termed. 2. Do not take selenium training until you do - 2 items mentioned below 3. Learn one programming language (Java, python, C++) very well. Put really hard effort to be good at this. 4. Study Software testing as a discipline - read well, there are good sites and blogs. Participate in bug bashes, sign up for utest.com. Be good at testing (not simply manual testing). Study Test Automation and see how and where it fits the SDLC. 5. Finally and most importantly - ask your parents to support your for next at least 2 years with no pressure for the job. You need that time to improve your employability. If you get a job in between - do not stop doing #3 and #4 ---------------------------

๐ญ Does a Tester require Testing Certifications to excel in his/her career? A point to ponder on! Yes Certification definitely adds value and credential to a resource but having said that, just by collecting certifications DOES NOT make you a better Tester. Certification with no hands on experience makes the document of no value as one will NOT be able to demonstrate it to the industry/their career. On a contrary, a Tester with Zero certifications but with loads of experience weighs heavier vs a Tester with a bag full of certifications and no experience. If you are a Tester who is chasing after Certifications, Pause and consider these pointers:- ๐ฏ What is your objective of acquiring the certification(s)? ๐ฏ Is it for salary hike? ๐ฏ Is it to add value to your portfolio? ๐ฏ Is it to stand out from other Testers? Ask yourself these questions too:- ๐ญ Where am I on Testing? ๐ญ What is my level of maturity in the Testing industry? ๐ญ How many years of hands on industrial experience do I have? ๐ญ Will this certification uplift me in my career? ๐ญ or will this certification just add on pages to my folders of certificates? ๐ญ Is this the right time for me to get certified or do I need more experience prior to getting into the roadmap of certifications? ๐ญ Do I have a career plan and if so, have I planned my roadmap in the Testing Industry? Anyone can get certified but it is essential to know how would the certification be of aid to your progress in your career. Don't be chasing certification but rather, have a career plan and acquire the certifications at the strategic timing to uplift you as a Tester. Your plan should make you stand out in a crowd and not be one in the crowd. โจ Think wisely and progress your way up as a Dynamic & Successful Software Tester. ๐ I am a Software Tester but I don't know what is my career graph like.
