Operational resilience and stability (ie getting you where you want to go on time, and when you want to fly) has been the single largest focus for virgin over the last few months! This effort has literally been a “whole of business” approach, covering our people (both back-of-house and frontline), network and fleet (right schedule & utilisation) and processes to orchestrate sustainable improvements. It goes without saying that we missed the mark for a few months (late 2023 / early 2024) in managing both internal and external factors that impact schedule integrity, and this simply meant that we let down many travelling Australians! These weren’t, and aren’t the standards we aspire to and I am so pleased to share the below update of BITRE (Gov’t stats) showing that we are back and better than ever! For impacted guests, or for those that have future travel plans with VA, please have comfort that today’s results are not a “peak” for us, or a “once-off”; more the standard we plan to uphold and will continue to focus on “being better” each and every day! British Airways has announced the cancellation of two additional routes due to ongoing issues with Rolls-Royce engines. This decision follows previous disruptions and affects both passenger travel plans and airline operations significantly, highlighting the challenges faced in maintaining service reliability.

Virgin Australia has bested Qantas individually, though Qantas and QantasLink services combined still came out on top, for on-time reliability in August. The latest BITRE data – the first since Rex axed its domestic jet operations, which consistently posted high on-time performance, at the end of July – showed QantasLink as the most reliable individual airline in on-time departures and arrivals, though Virgin saw the lowest cancellations. https://bit.ly/3BaogL3

Qantas and QantasLink have come out on top of the latest BITRE reliability data, despite lagging Virgin and Jetstar on cancellations. QF-designated services in September saw an on-time departure rate of 77.1 per cent and on-time arrivals of 76 per cent, compared to 73.1 per cent and 73 per cent respectively for VA flights; however, Virgin’s cancellation rate was half of Qantas’ at 1.4 per cent compared to 2.8 per cent. https://lnkd.in/gmakxEx5

Jetstar has beaten both Qantas and Virgin Australia for lower cancellations, with half the long-term average for the month of May 2024. BITRE data for May 2024 shows that just 1.1 per cent of Jetstar flights were cancelled last month, lower than Virgin Australia at 2.1 per cent and Qantas and QantasLink at 2.6 per cent, though Rex and regional carrier Hinterland Aviation had the best cancellation rates at 0.8 per cent. https://bit.ly/45BXSot

Qantas is making big changes to its frequent flyer program in a move that will increase the points needed for seat redemptions and raise the cost of carrier charges from August. As part of the changes, Qantas will add a million Classic Reward seats on partner airlines such as Finnair, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Iberia from later this year. Qantas frequent flyers will also have the opportunity to redeem points on seats with Hawaiian Airlines, which was previously part of Virgin Australia’s airline partner family.
