Recently, the Chinese National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine has released supportive measures📰 to give full play to the role of #TCM in the country’s rehabilitation services, aiming to meet the people’s increasing demand for improved medical services. According to the guidelines, more than 70 percent of second-tier TCM hospitals in China will have rehabilitation medicine departments by 2025.💡 As TCM has a unique edge in disease prevention, #treatment and #rehabilitation, the guidelines require hospitals to leverage TCM fully in the improvement and restoration of physical function in acute disease cases, as well as in the prevention of chronic diseases. On September 11th, the National Assembly’s Health and Wellfare Committee hosted the forum “Seeking ways to improve access to rare disease medicine”, organized by Korean Organization for Rare Disease and Korean Asociation of Medical Journalists. Important stakeholders as MOWH and HIRA joined the meeting during the pannel discussion. Mr Lee, patient suffering from Sjögren’s syndrome and PPF (progresive pulmonary fibrosis), told his heartbeaking story, worsening condition leaving him at risk of sudden respiratory emergency. Mr Lee was finally treated with an inovative, but unreibursed drug, despite being reimbursed in many OECD countries, with great clinical outcome since starting the treatment. However, Mr Lee’s family struggles financially to pay the medical bills, and he urged the Government to accelerate the treatment’s reimbursement process. The panel and healthcare professionals voiced the need to enhance access to treatment for severe and rare diseases patients, that are often neglected by the curent policies. It’s a call to action for Korean Government to strengthen the access for critical rare disease and patients having no other treatment alternative. Every single patient counts! I am a physician and it is extremely emotional and frustrated to listen the patients who are left behind, as we strive to offer treatment options tailored to each patient need. Improving patient well-being it’s an ethical responsibility and ultimately, to ensure the best possible health outcome for them. “It’s a choice for the country, but it’s survival for us!” Words that will stick in my memory for a long time.
