On Monday this week I attended the NLA's Tall Buildings: The next decade presentation where Tom Nancollas and Tuba Ozbay spoke about the future plans for Tall Buildings in London, and the importance that Sustainability places into designing the next generation of tall buildings. Highlights of the presentation: - Tall buildings should be designed for a longer than 60 year life span, designers need to think of this typology as infrastructure projects - sustainability has made architectural design more honest, by removing all the unnecessary items (like internal finishes) to reduce embodied carbon - The new City of London's 2040 policy plan is meant to be more flexible to allow for more creativity - The sustainability strategy for tall buildings needs to include a holistic view not only focusing on carbon reduction, but also biodiversity and social value #NLATallBuildings #sustainability #tallbuildings RSHP

I’m excited to share the story of Mannheim’s U-Halle, a powerful example of architecture’s potential to connect us to our roots while guiding us toward a sustainable future. This project isn’t just about transforming a building; it’s about transforming our relationship with the spaces we inherit. In a world where materials are increasingly scarce, U-Halle highlights the importance of revitalising existing spaces and making resource-conscious choices. Imagine a world where every building is valued, where life is revived in old walls, creating places that inspire and connect. U-Halle stands as a reminder that sustainability in architecture goes beyond materials and technology; it's about respecting what’s already here, reimagining it with care, and creating spaces that resonate deeply with the community. As material shortages and environmental concerns reshape our industry, projects like U-Halle show us that the future of architecture lies in rethinking our built heritage, creating meaningful spaces that enrich communities while reducing our environmental impact. Rather than relocating, homeowners are creatively transforming their spaces, making the most of what they already have—right above them. It's great to see #LarchLoft by Whittaker Parsons featured in Evening Standard, as anna white explores the rise of airspace projects with Federico Ortiz. Featured in #DMI2024, this rooftop extension takes full advantage of limited urban space while introducing sustainability and style, offering a new perspective on how rooftop extensions can completely elevate (literally) the living experience. As we continue to navigate evolving urban landscapes, projects like these show how innovation in architecture and design can enhance both lifestyle and environmental responsibility.
