QBE is harnessing geospatial data, AI, and aerial imagery to support the claims experience for commercial customers impacted by severe weather events. This technology was put to the test in an Australian pilot during Cyclone Jasper in December 2023. “Having access to geospatial data allowed us to respond more effectively. We were able to assess the impacts immediately, rather than waiting for hydrologist reports,” said Chad Vigar, Head of Property Claims, QBE Australia Pacific. “Our teams were also able to assess in real-time what resources and trades would be needed to respond effectively and carry out repairs.” Learn more about the technology behind the pilot: https://lnkd.in/eYUpYBi7 Arron Mann (GAICD), James Orchard, Lynn Thompson, Alex Taylor, Mattias Hallersbo Image credit: ICEYE #QBEVentures #GeospatialTechnology #AI #Insurtech #Claims

Marine Officer | MBA Graduate | Nautical Science Expert | Enhancing Maritime Efficiency & Strategy | Navigating Excellence with Business Acumen
Voyage Data Recorders (VDR): Capturing Critical Voyage Information In the maritime industry, the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) is an indispensable tool that enhances safety, transparency, and operational efficiency. Similar to an aircraft's black box, a VDR captures vital information about a ship's voyage, including navigational data, communications, and ship movements. My experience at sea has underscored the critical role VDRs play in modern maritime operations A VDR continuously records a wide range of data, such as GPS position, speed, heading, bridge audio, radar images, and engine performance. This information is crucial for post-incident analysis, helping investigators understand the sequence of events leading up to an incident. By providing a comprehensive and accurate record, VDRs contribute significantly to maritime safety by facilitating thorough investigations During my career, I have seen how VDRs can be pivotal in resolving incidents. In the event of a collision, grounding, or other maritime accidents, the data captured by the VDR provides an unbiased account of what transpired. This information is invaluable for identifying the root causes of accidents and implementing measures to prevent future occurrences. The maritime industry is constantly evolving, and so are VDR technologies. Modern VDRs are equipped with advanced features that enhance their functionality and reliability. For instance, some VDRs now include float-free capsules that detach and float to the surface in the event of a sinking, making it easier to recover the recorded data. Another trend is the integration of VDR data with other ship systems. By combining VDR data with information from the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), and other navigational tools, operators can gain a holistic view of the vessel's operations. This integration facilitates real-time monitoring and decision-making, improving overall operational efficiency and safety. Additionally, the advent of cloud technology and big data analytics is transforming how VDR data is used. Instead of merely being a tool for post-incident analysis, VDR data can now be continuously uploaded to the cloud and analyzed in real-time. This enables predictive maintenance, where potential issues can be identified and addressed before they escalate into serious problems. Reflecting on my experiences, the VDR has proven to be an essential asset for any vessel. Its role in capturing comprehensive voyage data not only enhances safety but also promotes transparency and accountability. For those considering a career in maritime operations, understanding the functionality and importance of VDRs is crucial To employers seeking skilled maritime professionals, my background in nautical science and hands-on experience with advanced navigational systems, including VDRs, position me well to contribute to your organization’s success. Let’s connect. #VDR #Saleh_Bayagoob
