In my previous post, I talked about “Why Community Participation is Crucial for Successful Projects.” In this post, I want to discuss “Enhanced Relevance and Effectiveness in Sustainable Community Projects.” From my experience working with community leaders, I have found that involving community members in planning a new clean water supply system has proven to be a game-changer. By ensuring that the services offered align perfectly with the community’s needs, we have seen a significant increase in usage and maintenance. This approach not only guarantees that the system is well-kept but also generates revenues that are reinvested into other community projects. Importantly, this model reduces dependency on external funding, fostering a sense of ownership and sustainability within the community. Please share your experiences and comments below.

Earlier this month, the Proyecto Ángeles community center in Yabucoa, Puerto Rico, welcomed outgoing U.S. Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, to one of the island’s recently completed Resilience Hubs! Resilience Hubs are funded under a cooperative agreement between the Department of Energy and IREC to support Puerto Rico’s most vulnerable communities. They equip community-serving facilities with distributed solar energy and storage that provide communities with access to electricity before, during, or after an extreme weather event or grid-related disaster. IREC partners with community leaders, nonprofits, educational institutions, interest groups, private businesses, and members of the public to develop microgrids and other clean energy installations to support vital institutions like Proyecto Ángeles. To date, Resilience Hubs have been completed in five communities across Puerto Rico, with five more scheduled to be completed in 2025. Read more on the blog at https://ow.ly/qfeX50UL8Xl!
