QA Automation Engineer | 2.5 Years in Java, Selenium, Playwright | REST API, Postman, CI/CD | Git, Maven, POM | SDET | Serving Notice Period
🏏 **Cricket & Code: A QA Engineer's & SDET's Struggle 🧠** In the IPL match frenzy, I can't help but see our shared challenges: 1. **Spotting the Unseen**: Like spotting hidden bugs, catching unexpected game changes is crucial for QA & SDET alike. 2. **Reacting in a Flash**: Swift action is essential, whether it's fixing a bug or responding to a sudden game twist. 3. **Navigating Complexity**: Every move in the match, like every line of code, adds to the complexity we must manage. 4. **Team Effort**: Just as cricket teams need collaboration, effective teamwork is our lifeline in software projects. When you're deep in cricket or code, remember the shared struggles we face. Let's keep learning and improving together! 🚀 #Software Testing #IPL #Qa Engineer #SDET

It is extremely unfortunate that yet again, I see LinkedIn posts endlessly revealing further QA layoffs, and where there aren't layoffs there are references to companies treating QA like second class developers OR not even that. I've know of a VERY well known company that: - Doesn't allow QA to speak to non-QA staff, such as Engineers, Artists etc - Doesn't show QA trailers/promo materials before they reach the public - Actively stops and punishes QA if they are to share publicly posted marketing material to their own walls and talking about their input on the project. - refers to QA as Unskilled workers and Non-Developers. - QA is the first port of call when there is a leak, even though its more reliably come from non-qa studios! - and more! Luckily, I am blessed with an amazing workplace and a team that truly values QA's input. It should NOT be that I am lucky. It should be that this is how QA are perceived. The QA I am familiar with care so deeply about their projects, learn new skills to further help development teams. Drive themselves further than expected just to understand other departments further so that they can increase ticket quality. Just on my team alone there are people learning 3D Art, Level Design, Games Design, SQL, C++ and more just so that they can become better QA as a result. Respect your QA, your AAA game will never be successful without them. Update: The good news is this clearly reached some people, including a lot of people with power to make the changes needed happen🙏 Bonus: One of the companies I referred to are in the majority of the people reading this post 🙂

"Current demand for SDETs vs traditional devs" Source: https://lnkd.in/gBe2rJyE "How is the demand for SDETs compared to traditional developers post-COVID? Are you finding more opportunities in QA roles than in development? Share your experiences and insights! #SDET #SoftwareDevelopment #QA #TechIndustry #JobMarket" Personal Experience as an SDET Before COVID, I worked as an SDET and toyed with the idea of transitioning to a developer role to avoid being pigeonholed. However, I ultimately found a different career path that suited me better. Despite this, I often wonder how my career trajectory would have differed if I had stayed in QA. Comparison of Demand SDETs, how in demand do you find yourselves compared to traditional developers in the current job market? From time to time I get asked, “what kind of job should I apply for? I love games but have no prior industry experience.” The answer is fairly nuanced, but your first career can be almost most anything! Signing up at a publisher is going to be your easiest inroad. Every type of role you might expect from a typical company is here, sales, marketing, PR, accounting, art, and more! You don’t need to know how to code, or have a labyrinthine knowledge of games. Passion is definitely important, but surprisingly few roles will need experience in the industry. I definitely recommend you assemble a list of your favorite publishers and check if they have any openings. Check link below for a list. (https://lnkd.in/gAmw2V2x) Of course the info above is most applicable if you already have an degree or prior experience in a given field. Now what if you have no experience at all in any career? Perhaps it’s your first job out of school? In that case I highly recommend taking a look at a QA role. This position is integral for testing games, finding bugs, and otherwise improving games. Best of all most associate roles shouldn’t require any prior experience! If you love games, and are willing to sink many hours into what can sometimes feel fairly repetitive, this is a great entry point into gaming. Coincidentally we’re hiring QA testers right now! Ping me and we can chat about it. Happy to give out refs if you think it’s a good fit

As bad as it's been for game dev, it's been much worse for QA. From the Wired story linked below: "Of those layoffs, it was quality assurance workers who seemed to have been most impacted; 22 percent of QA workers said they’d been laid off in the last year. Only 7 percent of developers overall reported losing their jobs." And it's probably even worse than even those numbers with the larger percentage of QA being contract vs full time and not being "laid off" just having their contracts cancelled/ended. Gabriel Tissot-Ritchot is right, there are other great opportunities for QA outside game dev with lots of other benefits. It can feel like you're losing your dream having to leave game dev (trust me, I know, I did it last year), however there are amazing products, teams, challenges, and opportunities that can be very fulfilling outside of games. https://lnkd.in/gSv9bewd

Fellow Video-game QA folks out there looking for work in 2024: Real talk. It's probably a moment in your career to side-step into opportunities outside of video-games. QA professionals are in demand everywhere software exists. If a product needs testing, there's an opportunity for you. 👥The talent pool is alot less saturated 🛡️Better job security 🏡More stable industries 😌Less stressful 👥Fewer competition for roles 💰Almost any other industry pays better, much better 📈Adds variety and adaptability for your resume When this industry stabilizes, matures and realizes your worth, come back. We all like games, but with how turbulent our world has been in the past few years, let's not get attached to something that is pulling you down My two cents!
