Are You a Facilitator or a Trainer? 🤔 Recently, a seasoned professional expressed interest in conducting a facilitaining skills workshop on our behalf. This intrigued me so I asked about their approach, they shared that usually they run a PowerPoint presentation along with some activities as ice breakers and energizers to engage the participants( the discussion was in detail) This made me reflect on a common misconception in the Learning and Development field: the interchangeable use of ‘facilitation’ and ‘training.’ Trainers and facilitators differ significantly in their approach to group dynamics: The key differences between a trainer and a group process facilitator are: 🔹Trainers focus on delivering content and helping participants apply it, while facilitators guide the group through a process to help the participants collectively create the content 🔹Trainers follow a more structured linear, pre-designed curriculum, while facilitators need to be flexible and responsive to the group's needs in the moment. 🔹Trainers often work from a hierarchical model where they are the expert imparting knowledge, while facilitators work from a collaborative model where they draw out the expertise of the group. 🔹Trainers are content experts, while facilitators are process experts. In group process facilitation, "process" refers to the methods and techniques used by the facilitator to help the group work together effectively. This includes how discussions are structured, how decisions are made, and how the group interacts to achieve their desired outcomes. The facilitator ensures that everyone participates, stays on track, and collaborates productively. 🔹Trainers are responsible for delivering specific learning objectives, while facilitators focus on enabling groups to process their experiences and achieve desired outcomes. In summary, trainers are content experts, while facilitators are process experts who guide groups to leverage their collective knowledge and experience. There are many more skills and competencies required for effective facilitation. #LearningAndDevelopment #Training #Engagement #FunLearning #Retention #Facilitation #CorporateTraining #ProfessionalDevelopment #Workshops #InnovativeLearning #L&D #LearningExperience #CreativeTraining #EffectiveLearning #EmployeeEngagement
