As Drilling Supervisor / Company Man, HSE is my top priority during drilling operations. The main objetive is to complete the well with 0 accidents/incidents, no damage to the environment and to deliver the well in full compliance with Ourhoud Organization Operations Policies and Standars. My goal is to ensure everyone returns safely with their families. Therefore, full PPE is totally mandatory at Rig site, even for them, so the first thing that I did was to give him his PPE when visited me during my last rotation in Algeria. I was recently assigned to oversee HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) operations at a Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) site. As an HSE Supervisor, it was my responsibility to ensure the safety of all personnel and maintain a safe working environment throughout the drilling process. Here are some key activities I focused on: Before commencing any work, I conducted comprehensive safety briefings with the crew to discuss potential hazards, emergency procedures, and site-specific safety protocols. This ensured everyone was aware of their responsibilities and the risks associated with HDD operations. I also ensured regular inspections of the site to identify and mitigate hazards. This included checking the integrity of equipment, ensuring proper PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) usage, and verifying that safety barriers and signage were in place and properly maintained. Continuous monitoring of the site was essential to ensure that safety protocols were being followed. I made sure that all activities were in line with the safety plan and that any deviations were immediately corrected. This proactive approach helped prevent incidents and maintain a safe working environment. Given the nature of HDD activities, it was crucial to have a robust emergency response plan. I ensured that emergency drills were conducted regularly, and all personnel were familiar with the emergency procedures. This included having first aid kits, spill response materials, and fire-fighting equipment readily available. I established clear channels of communication between the crew, supervisors, and management. Additionally, I ensured that all incidents, near misses, and safety observations were reported and documented promptly. I believe that continuous education and training are vital in maintaining a high safety standard, So I take out 5-10 minutes daily during toolbox talks to have short safety topics/sessions for the crew to keep them updated on the latest safety practices and regulations. As a HSE Supervisor and Trainer, I understand the importance of prioritizing safety and taking a proactive approach to ensure the well-being of our teams and the success of our projects. I encourage my fellow HSE professionals to share their experiences and best practices to create safer work environments across our industry.

Critical Lifting Operations: Key Considerations for HSE Officers Critical lifting involves unique risks that demand extra attention to safety and procedure. There are five key types of critical lifts where a Rigger 1 certification is required: 1. Lifts above 40 tons 2. Tandem lifting operations 3. Loads exceeding 85% of the crane’s rated capacity 4. Lifts near overhead power lines with voltage below 50,000 volts where the crane is within 3 meters (10 feet) of the line 5. Lifts requiring attachments to the main boom As an HSE Officer, it’s crucial to ensure the following documents and checks are in place before proceeding: Documents to Review: 1.
