It’s October and time to celebrate National Community Planning Month! The American Planning Association (APA) established National Community Planning Month. APA states, “Planners work to improve the well-being of all people living in our communities by taking a comprehensive perspective. This approach leads to safer, resilient, more equitable, and more prosperous communities. We celebrate the role that planning plays in creating great communities each October with National Community Planning Month.” QK’s expertise in land use and policy planning helps our clients develop common-sense solutions to complex planning problems. Our plans promote efficient and sustainable land development, incorporate development and redevelopment patterns that optimize existing infrastructure investments, and consume less land that can then remain available for agriculture, open space, and natural systems. Tony Ignacio, one of our talented Senior Landscape Architects, is a true example of QK’s core value: Growth. Before joining QK, Tony worked in several landscape and planning industry capacities, including positions as a Landscape Architect in Southern California, Senior Federal Planner at AECOM, and Lecturer at Cal Poly Pomona. His educational background is equally varied, as he earned a BA in Marine Science from the University of San Diego with a minor in Communications, an MPA and MSES at Indiana University, and an MLA from Cal Poly Pomona. After many unique experiences, Tony found his calling for landscape architecture when he was introduced to the field while working at Oceana in DC, lobbying Congress for cruise ship reform. He realized it combined many of his passions, such as environmental design, environmental systems, communication, education, and community-building. As a Senior Landscape Architect, Tony leverages his diverse background to engage in various projects, from comprehensive planning to community outreach to detailed construction documentation. Some days, he could be designing a streetscape, the next a master plan, visualization, or writing technical specs – this variety keeps his work dynamic and exciting. The most crucial part for Tony is the ability to affect positive change at the local level. Landscape Architecture has the ability to do that at multiple scales and functions, and having the opportunity to achieve it with our internal interdisciplinary teams makes working at QK special. Tony particularly enjoys environmentally- and community-focused projects, allowing him to showcase his expertise and contribute to the well-being of our communities. #WeAreQK #LandscapeArchitecture #Growth

At QK, passion plays a major role in everything we do; it’s the driving force that propels our work forward and fuels our commitment to excellence. Our passion ensures that every project serves a greater purpose. Today, we’re proud to spotlight Steve Brandt, Principal Planner at QK, whose dedication and enthusiasm epitomize this core value. As a lifelong resident of the San Joaquin Valley, Steve's commitment to his role as a city planner is deeply intertwined with his love for the region. “My passion is for the Valley to be a wonderful place to live your life,” Steve shares. Steve remains steadfast in believing that every project contributes to shaping a brighter, more vibrant future. Steve’s journey into city planning wasn’t conventional. “I didn’t go to school for city planning. I kind of lucked into the profession,” he explains. A pivotal moment came when Steve read 'Building Gotham,' a book chronicling the early city planners of 1900s New York City. This book reignited Steve’s enthusiasm by showcasing how pioneering thinkers—engineers, architects, and financiers—collaborated to tackle the unprecedented challenges of a rapidly urbanizing world. The book’s portrayal of holistic planning inspired Steve. Just as those early planners shaped the future of New York City, Steve aims to influence the future of the San Joaquin Valley with thoughtful, innovative planning. Steve maintains his passion by reflecting on the long-term impact of his work. "Since I live in Visalia and worked for the city as a planner about 20 years ago, I can see the long-term effects of routine decisions we made back then. They still make a difference today." This perspective keeps Steve motivated, knowing his decisions today will continue to shape communities for years to come. Steve Brandt exemplifies how passion can drive meaningful work and create lasting positive change. At QK, we’re proud to have leaders like Steve, who embody our core values and inspire us all to achieve excellence in every project we undertake. We look forward to seeing the continued impact of Steve’s work and are grateful for his unwavering dedication to making the San Joaquin Valley a better place for all. #WeAreQK #theQKdifference #ValuesInAction #Passion #LandUsePlanning
