Fascinating story, if not a little unsettling for those who have watched the movie/TV show Snowpiercer. But hey, another possible good use for caustic soda in one of these geoengineering approaches. 🎮 Geologists have managed to sample the upper mantle from a record depth ▪️ The Earth's mantle — is an intermediate layer between the Earth's crust and core. Because of its great depth, it has not yet been penetrated. ▪️ In the ocean, the Earth's crust is thinner at 10-15 kilometers, so the chances of taking samples here are higher. Drilling to such depths can be compared to space travel in terms of complexity. ▪️ The most studied region of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, composed of abyssal peridotites, — is the Atlantis Massif. From April to June 2023, scientists worked here from the JOIDES Resolution ship. Scientists managed to extract a nearly continuous sample of the upper mantle more than a kilometer long. "When we extracted the samples last year, it was a significant event in the history of Earth science. Of even greater significance is what they will tell us about the composition and evolution of the planet," — said Professor Johan Lissenberg of Cardiff University. The analysis of the mineral composition yielded the first surprises. ▪️ The samples contained less pyroxene, — a silicate mineral enriched in oceanic crust and mantle. In contrast, the magnesium concentration exceeded the values predicted by the models. ▪️ Probably, the rocks, rising from the depths, melted much more strongly. This faster melting is explained by the processes taking place in the core. Because of the excess energy coming from space, the core heats itself and heats more magma. As a result, the magma melts faster, becomes more fluid and changes its chemical composition.
