The mood-music emanating from the TBI and from central government is, for me, heartening. I have witnessed first-hand for 30 years the counterproductive friction, resistance and the costs - in terms of both population health outcomes and the UK economy - to research and development from using resources such as anonymous, NHS routine data (real world data [RWD]). Hopefully, we are at an inflection point and things will now change; and quickly. However, it is essential that people in the public sector and the university sector recognise that this should be driven by the private sector, at least in a public-private partnership. The public sector, the university sector, and wider society in turn then benefit from innovation, and wealth & job creation. Fingers crossed!

Grateful to have shared the stage with Steffanie Strathdee and Vincent Racaniello a few weeks ago at #SXSW. Here are three messages I am sharing following our #MedicinesGoViral conversation: 1. Viruses historically have been instruments of harm, but we now know they can be leveraged to do some real good in our world as recent development of cell/gene and phage therapies has shown. 2.
