Finding what works for you is one great way to not become bored as a Quantity Surveyor. Truth be told, the docile nature of the profession can really make a fun loving personality see his or her work as a burden. I have had to go through different phases in my almost fifteen years as a Quantity Surveyor and I dare say, it can be boring. 😂 *The patience and time required to not only read drawings/blueprints, can drain ones mental strength. *The obligation laid on you to grasp and provide cost from the work done by the professionals who prepared the drawings/blueprints, with the most careful attention to details is commendable but a great skill. *The fact that sometimes you may not have the use of your thoughts, as you have experienced some sort of blankness is a great sacrifice we pay as Quantity Surveyors. *The patience and self control you are made to have when every effort put into the preparation is only seen as mare typed document is a great skill. *The expectation from you in accuracy, grammar and choice of words and tone in delivering correspondence and project meeting minutes can sometimes leave you on edge. *The fact that I am expected to know and have the pages of project Bill of Quantities and all documents, especially contractual ones stored in my head, with a download as needed is so much of a mental abd emotional torture. *Even my identity is understood from another's name. Oh!! please I just bought a plot of land, can you help me with a survey plan? 😂. Then am led into the teaching mode, with explanations on what my duty is as A Quantity Surveyor. We do so much as Quantity Surveyors, but our work does not carry that expected noise and encomium . Yet in this boredom did I emerge, a brilliant Amazon!!! Quantity Surveying; * Sharpened my mathematical ability and gave my children a tutor. *Taught me listening and communication skills way before I knew what these meant. *Helped me horn my writing skills. *Gave me an analytical mind. *Saved me from debt. I do not fail to seek alternatives to everything. *Made me a home owner. I was able to do this because I was in control of every aspect of my project. *Help me maintain agility. *Made me a savior of some sort, as I became a doctor and Lawyer to Clients in the Construction industry. As I approach my one-year milestone as a Quantity Surveyor, I’ve realised just how much this role is about balancing technical knowledge, practical experience, and communication skills. Here are 3 things I wish I’d known when starting out: 1️⃣ Never underestimate the importance of contracts – Every decision ties back to the contract. Learn it thoroughly, and it will guide you through even the trickiest situations. 2️⃣ Ask questions – As a newer QS, I’ve learnt more from experienced colleagues and project teams than any textbook ever could. 3️⃣ Mistakes are part of the process – The key is learning from them and making sure they don’t happen again! #QuantitySurveying #ConstructionJourney

Most Quantity Surveyors won’t understand what I have created for them Because most just go to work, do what they ‘have’ to do and go home Most wake up on Monday thinking - grrr I ‘have’ work today Most get excited for Friday so they can enjoy for 2 days Most have compartmentalised their life into work and play They don’t understand that the work they do every day should be building their future They don’t see every day as a learning platform They don’t see themselves as the asset that they are building They are not engaged in their day They don’t question why things work the way they do So they never wake up excited for work So they are never able to contribute actual value to their projects So they are rarely able to influence the outcome The world has changed, but Quantity Surveyors remain stuck in the old model of the working world The old model which was to work for 5 days because they had no other choice and then retire at 65 That model does not sustain itself in this new world In this new fast paced world I hope one day, the entire QS world can see the value in what I have created for them It is based on the new way that the world is working It is based on waking up excited every single day It is based on you being the asset If you agree with anything I have said, please like this post so others can see the value of it It is very very hard to reach Quantity Surveyors without you liking my posts It is time to wake Quantity Surveyors up To get you excited for work every single day To stop producing average quality work To BUILD the FUTURE

I ALMOST GAVE UP WHEN I SAW THIS DOCUMENT 😩 Being a construction professional, particularly a Quantity Surveyor, means facing many hurdles on the path to success. How many times have I written the words Quantity Surveyor in the last 21 years? It’s like one of those sweet jars, full of little sweets and someone says, count them. Time 🕰️ is an interesting measure. 21 years ago, some of the people that I will be speaking with today were in nappies when I began my Headhunting career. Some were just starting school, others, leaving school, etc. There are many who had spent a decade working for various businesses, main contractors, little contractors, housebuilders and other sectors. Like an army of ants 🐜 appearing and working to rise through the ranks. Some of those QSs are MDs and Directors of Commercial departments now. I love helping people shape their careers and lives. If you’re a QS, no matter which end of the spectrum, I’m someone that you can trust to be in your corner and do my best to help navigate your career for the better. I understand your role and the importance of how you manage yourself and others.
