The Global Tea Institute of the University of California at Davis is hosting its annual colloquium in two days! Please join us in person or virtually. In a world that is constantly shifting around us, GTI’s 9th Annual Colloquium, Tea in a Changing World, presents a day full of talks that consider the diverse ways this is happening to tea in society and culture, science, and health, and as well as from the perspective of the tea industry. We think about shifts in time, space, and expectations, and whether changes in the climate are affecting how tea is grown. We consider how tea rituals have changed and adapted over time in various cultures and societies around the world. We ask how the human body responds in different way to having tea in its system. And we learn how the industry is pivoting to address these many changes.

Exploring the Essence of African Tea Terroir 🌍 In the world of tea, the term "terroir" we often associate with wine finds its own quiet prominence in the diverse landscapes of Africa. Terroir encapsulates the environmental factors that shape the taste of tea leaves—the soil, climate, and altitude. In Africa, this translates into a fascinating array of flavors. A Glimpse Into African Terroirs: Kenya's Boldness: The high-altitude plains and fertile soils of Kenya contribute to the robustness of its black teas. Malawi's Plateaus: Malawi's teas, grown on plateaus, offer a delicate balance of brightness and complexity. Rwanda's Misty Hills: Teas from Rwanda's misty hills carry nuanced flavors, reflecting the terroir that nurtures them. Terroir in African teas tells a story of altitude, rainfall, and the interplay between cultivation and nature. Each cup offers a taste journey through the essence of the land. Understanding terroir fosters an appreciation for sustainable sourcing, supporting responsible agricultural practices and local economies. In each cup of African tea, there's more than just a beverage; there's a landscape, a climate, and a narrative waiting to be discovered. Here's to the terroir of African teas, where each sip is a connection to nature's craft.
