Today's International Workers day celebrates a real shift in labor power happening in the United States. Over the last 12 months, organized workers have won far bigger raises and better contracts than just a few years ago. Women, workers of color, and disabled workers have the most to gain. As TCF Senior Fellow Steven Greenhouse put it: "If unions are about anything, they’re about creating broadly shared prosperity, about lifting pay for workers and reducing gaps between rich and poor, about making sure that jobs are safe, and about assuring that people have health coverage and enough for retirement and also have work-life balance that gives them time to be with their families." A couple of weeks ago, Jennifer Fletcher with Deloitte Consulting spoke at the Economic Outlook Forum with the Baldwin County Economic Development Alliance about how site selection has changed in the US in the past several years. In 2018, the top deciding factors were: 👷♂️ Skilled Labor Availability 💲 Labor Costs 💸 Corporate Tax Rates But now, the top three factors are: 💲Labor Cost 🏖 Quality of Life 👷♂️Skilled Labor Availability It was interesting to see companies are less worried about workers being available and more worried about the Quality of Life of the people they employ.
