🏡 Is affordable housing the key to attracting and retaining top talent in our schools? 🗝️ As a real estate and marketing professional, I am always fascinated by the impact that housing has on our communities and the individuals that call them home. Today, I came across an article discussing the Monroe County School District's plan to develop 150 units of affordable housing for teachers in Key West. This got me thinking about the importance of affordable housing in attracting and retaining educators, and the potential benefits it could bring to our education system. Here are a few key points from the article: - The Trumbo Road project would be one of the largest and most important affordable housing projects in Key West in recent years. - The school district has partnered with Integra Investments, a Miami-based real estate firm with a proven track record in developing affordable housing. - The historic Bruce Hall on United Street would be renovated to house the district offices and provide community amenities. - State Rep. Jim Mooney and state Sen. Anna Maria Rodriquez have already secured $2 million for the project, but more funding is needed. Here's a must-read from Dr. Ivan Harrell and Dr. Sara Goldrick-Rab about the College Housing Assistance Program (CHAP) in Tacoma, WA. All students should have access to food, housing, and other basic needs to pursue their academic and career goals. Unfortunately, our policies haven't kept up with the needs of our students. I love that this piece calls out specific reforms that can be made, including: 1. Reforming the Low Income Housing Tax Credit’s eligibility rules to create more affordable housing for community college students. 2. Eliminating student restrictions on access to public housing. 3. Revising land use and zoning rules to increase the affordability of rental housing. A new report from the state California Legislative Analyst's Office’s (LAO) indicates that California Community Colleges College (CCC) students are experiencing higher rates of homelessness compared to @University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) students. This has shed light on the limitations of the “rapid rehousing program,” a state initiative launched in 2019 to address the escalating issue of student homelessness. While the program has made strides in reducing the rate of students facing housing insecurity, its impact is not enough. As of December 2023, New York State is losing more residents per year than any other state in the country.
