It’s well-known that the waterfront has historically been a male-dominated industry.
And though progress has been made, it still leans towards a male-centric landscape, albeit to a lesser extent.
The Council and its members are steadfast in our commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where everyone, including women and non-binary folks, is welcomed and encouraged to thrive.
Navigating the traditionally male-dominated waters of the maritime industry poses unique challenges for women and non-binary individuals. Our members have identified the need to address this disparity, acknowledging the untapped potential within our community.
Recognizing the historical gender disparity, @GCT, one of the Council’s member organizations, has created a women’s leadership group aimed at creating a supportive ecosystem. By fostering mentorship and allyship, they aim to empower and elevate women in roles traditionally held by men.
Cheryl Yaremko, GCT’s Chief Financial Officer, shares that “Almost my entire career has been spent in male-dominated industries. I know what it feels like to be the only woman at the table. That’s why I’m committed to making a difference for women, minorities and others who may feel left out of the labour market.”
Our members are making exciting strides in transforming our waterfront workforce, reshaping the narrative to foster an industry that truly reflects the uniqueness and strength of its diverse communities.
