The Coreus team recently held its 'London Retrofit Market Update' roundtable discussion. Hosted at the fabulous Home Grown Club - private members, 18 industry leaders that included architects, contractors and funders joined the discussion to assess how ambitious government retrofit targets. I recently came across a fantastic video shared by Kinga Ociepa-Kossowska, which brilliantly highlights the importance of #assetoptimisation, #rethinking property use, and implementing #inclusivedesign. The 2024 Sydney Build Expo tackled significant issues in their 'Australia's Green Home Revolution - Retrofitting the Nation' panel discussion. Bridge Housing's Ellis Blaikie joined Ken McBryde, Architecture Design Director of Gensler, Elham Monavari, Head of Green Start Strategic Deliver at the Green Building Council of Australia and Tom Pennington, Vice President of the Smart Cities Council, to discuss the need to build climate resilience into the nation's existing and ageing housing stock. Ellis advocated for social housing providers to lead the charge. The sector's strength in the ESG domains of social and governance makes leadership in environmental sustainability a natural fit. She noted that clear policy direction and funding streams will be essential prerequisites to tackling the problem at scale. The benefits of technological innovation support, industry capacity building, and price reductions through economies of scale would also benefit the broader housing market - making retrofits more accessible to other homeowners. Evidence of retrofitting social housing in action: In 2023, Bridge Housing successfully retrofitted a 1960s redbrick walk-up in Glebe, installing double-glazing, LED lighting, water-heating technology and more to lighten the footprint of the medium-density development.

This week, we attended NLA’s inaugural Retrofit Summit at the historic Livery Hall at Guildhall to hear from voices across the built environment talk about the potentials of adaptive reuse and circular principles in revitalising old buildings.   There were a myriad of topics discussed such as:  ▪️ The role of retrofit in community regeneration ▪️ How retrofit can tie into the circular economy ▪️ The need for consistent net zero carbon policies ▪️ The importance of capturing and sharing data to create benchmarks ▪️ The limitations of retrofit and how to decide when it is the best option   We also had a look at some exciting retrofit projects in the pipeline including: ▫️ London Museum by Stanton Williams  ▫️ Zodiac House by shedkm ▫️ 150 Aldersgate Street by Fletcher Priest Architects ▫️ Peterborough Court by John Robertson Architects   Underpinning all the presentations and discussions was the importance of passion and knowledge in championing retrofit.
