A Space Odyssey: “London’s historic Space House – an icon of the 1960s – has been brought into a new era”, Mandi Keighran writes in the latest issue of OnOffice magazine.   Delving into the ‘complete reset’ that Space House has undergone in recent years, Keighran spoke with Tim Gledstone, partner at Squire & Partners, the architects who worked on the renovation of the Brutalist building: “We wanted to show the world that refurbishing a listed building sustainably can be done, and be done magnificently.”   The restored workspace now offers two additional floors, a state-of-the-art events space, a public piazza, 360-degree views of London from the outside terrace and a convenient bike storage facility for over 500 bikes.   Read more via the latest issue of On Office: https://lnkd.in/e4tCs2mS

We wanted to share a recently submitted application for this #office refurbishment scheme, to refresh the corporate identity of the client's existing premises. Thinking Buildings have been working in collaboration with Hawkins Group of Companies Ltd and Brady Corporation on a #refurbishment of Brady's existing office building. The current facility is quite dated and has a poor layout for modern working practices. The new proposal re-orientates the building to the north entrance, and through recladding and internal refurbishment, brings the offices up to modern standards both in terms of thermal performance and operational function. The new entrance is designed to provide a considered arrival for staff and customers, improving the street frontage and giving a clear, considered #corporateidentity to the building. #thinkingbuildings #architects #planningapplication

Now known as 110 The Queen’s Walk, the former home of London's GLA will undergo a redesign from architect Gensler which will see the slanted egg-shaped building straightened to include more office and retail space. Manchester's new 'upside down' office block, a £77million tower, has been given the green light by planners. The NXQ will be constructed on the corner of Great Ancoats Street and Lever Street, in the Northern Quarter. We’re excited to share that the super-structure erection has begun at 43 Brook Green, a significant step in the redevelopment of this historic EMI Headquarters. The frame will support 50% of the new office space and will continue with a two-storey extension to the roof, adding more office space and a high-spec pavilion. Located in West London, the 120,000 sqft Grade A office project will retain the building’s iconic façade. By preserving and exposing the concrete structure internally, we have reduced embodied carbon by 9,500 tonnes, contributing significantly to the project’s sustainability goals. This project, led by General Projects and built by Bennett (Construction) Ltd combines sustainability with cutting-edge design, preserving the character of a 1930s landmark while creating high-quality office environments. A very satisfying part of our work is being able to give older buildings a new purpose and lease of life to protect their future for generations to come. Peel House in Sheffield city centre had come to the end of its useful life as an office building. There was an opportunity to transform the building into a new use that would secure its future for many decades to come. Working on behalf of our client, we converted this former office building into The Fitzgerald, a residential development comprising 102 apartments. The things I particularly like about this scheme are: 🏘️ More new homes in the city centre. 🏢 The sensitive refurbishment preserved the strong lines and robust architecture of the former office building. ✅ Breathe new life into a building whose former use had become obsolete, securing its future for many decades to come. 🏬 A good example of ‘gentle density, buildings ranging between 3-7 storeys. ♻️ Reusing the existing structure was a more sustainable alternative to demolition and the construction of a new building on the site. The Fitzgerald is a project that can help bring new life into urban centres, and it is a classic example of our work.

Two Stantec-designed workplaces are featured in Building Design + Construction’s look at “15 historic or adaptive reuse office projects for 2025.” Southline in #Boston was retrofitted from the Boston Globe HQ into a 700,000-SF modern hub for creative office, laboratory, and retail uses. Offices for Turner Construction in #Philadelphia embraced the design concept “Foundational Concrete” as a nod to their pioneering use of steel reinforced concrete. In contrast, many face the challenges of working in #sickbuildings, confined to cubes without natural light or fresh air, relying solely on artificial lighting and air conditioning. Embracing natural light not only reduces dependence on artificial sources but also positively impacts well-being. Architects designing office spaces today should prioritize incorporating daylight and openings to enhance the overall work environment. #naturallight #offices #sickbuilding
