South Korea's 한화시스템 has decided to shut down Hanwha Phasor, a subsidiary producing aviation satellite communication antennas, to focus on the ground-based antenna business for military applications. 🔗The COMMANDS project at Eurosatory We are pleased to announce that last week, Fernando Grávalos, Senior Manager for the EU Defence Programmes at Sener Aerospace & Defence, gave a keynote speech at the Eurosatory exhibition as part of the panel ‘Ethics in the Defence Industry: From Moral Obligations to Strategic Responsibilities’ organised by C&V Consulting. Fernando referred to the COMMANDS project, which, by combining manned-unmanned teaming and working on platforms with multiple levels of autonomy, is addressing the ethical issues associated with artificial intelligence. He recalled two key principles that he believes EU consortia should respect when considering ethical issues: 1)     We must not develop or work on a lethal autonomous weapon system that targets human lives without meaningful human control. 2)     The artificial intelligence systems we use in the military domain must be adaptable and compatible with the rules of engagement on the battlefield. Airbus Defense and Space has won a substantial $2.5 billion contract from the German military for the SATCOMBw 3 next-generation communications satellites. This deal consists of the development and deployment of two advanced geostationary satellites, as well as upgrades to the ground segment, launch services, and operational support for 15 years. These satellites are expected to offer increased bandwidth, improved security, and enhanced resilience, marking a significant upgrade from the aging SATCOMBw 2 system.
