42.9% of Australians have experienced mental health issues in their life (ABS, 2022). 1 in 5 Australians have experienced mental health issues in the last 12mths (this almost doubles for young people aged 16-24) (ABS, 2022). Mental health has impacted me personally and many of those close to me. To show my support I’m completing 3,249 push-ups this month as part of The Push-Up Challenge to push for better mental health in Australia. This number represents the 3,249 people who died by suicide in Australia in 2022 (the most recent available data). It is Mental Health Awareness Week. The theme this year is 'Movement: Moving more for our mental health'. Since 2001, the Mental Health Foundation has been leading Mental Health Awareness Week - bringing together the UK to focus on getting good mental health. Each May, millions of people from every part of society take part. They include people in schools and further education; private, public and charity sectors; families and individuals. Despite the benefits of moving, so many of us struggle to move enough. We know there are many different reasons for this, so this Mental Health Awareness Week we want to encourage people to find moments for movement in their daily routines. This week is Children's Mental Health Awareness Week, with the theme "My Voice Matters", encouraging children and young people to feel confident they can express themselves. As data released by the NHS evidences that children's emergency mental health referrals in England soar by 53% with more than 600 children a week deteriorating to such a state that they have reached crisis point. An analysis of official data by the Royal College of Psychiatrists shows that many of the children requiring emergency care – some suicidal or seriously ill as a result of eating disorders – have been stuck on waiting lists for an average of five months, and in the worst cases as long as two years. We need to do more. We receive referrals from the NHS, schools, other charities and parents of children who struggle through each day. Your support can enable children to overcome the hurdles they face and gain a new perspective. Build their self-esteem, teach new skills, forge friendships and have someone there to listen and to help them to express themselves. Together we can change the lives of children with complex needs. Last year in England, 23% of 17-19-year-olds had a probable mental disorder 🔹 We can’t currently see a light at the end of the tunnel for the educational sector to have enough funds to prioritise student wellbeing - especially for post-16 settings.
