Steve's message is spot on. Searching for the 'perfect candidate' sets unrealistic expectations for hiring managers and adds pressure on candidates. No one is perfect, and successful leaders know how to focus on people’s strengths while helping them improve. As recruiters, it’s our job to be honest. We should show both the good and the areas that need growth in each candidate. This leads to better conversations and stronger hires. If we keep waiting for 'perfection,' we’ll miss out on talented people who have the potential to grow and succeed. STOP LOOKING FOR THE PERFECT CANDIDATE. THEY DON’T EXIST! Let’s face it, there is no such thing as a perfect candidate for any role. Every candidate, every existing employee, has things they need to work on that makes them “imperfect”. It’s never been about finding the perfect candidate. It’s been about knowing where the imperfection is so you can support it. Recruiters - stop presenting the “perfect” candidate and present every candidate honestly. Lay out the positives as well as the concerns - they both exist for every single candidate. If you don’t have concerns, you don’t really know the candidate. Leaders - stop asking for the “perfect” candidate. They do not exist. The last person you hired wasn’t perfect, not even your top performer. Everyone needs development. Everyone has something they need to work on. If you keep waiting for the “perfect” candidate you’ll end up waiting forever. Expect your recruiter to lay out the positives of each candidate along with the concerns you need to dig deeper on - don’t discount a candidate with concerns as they all have them! How we got here I’m not sure. But it sets the candidate up for disappointment. Creates unrealistic expectations. And doesn’t address reality.
