The storm wreaked havoc on crops, livestock, and infrastructure, leaving many without power, water, and supplies. Here's how our resilient farming community is coping and supporting each other: 1. Damage and Devastation: Catherine Ward, owner of One Acre Farms—an educational farm for special needs kids—has been dealing with uprooted trees, damaged livestock pens, and power outages. She's running the farm on a large portable generator, primarily to keep the water well functioning for all the animals. 2. The Power of Community: Farmers in the Houston area are rallying together. Tracy Hord, who owns an equestrian facility, emphasizes that they take care of each other. Whether it's sourcing bedding for horses or ensuring livestock have what they need, their resilience shines through. 3. Climate Change Impact: Extreme weather events like droughts, floods, and storms hit farmers hard. Climate change exacerbates these conditions, posing additional challenges. In Texas, smaller producers with individual farms are particularly affected. Between Houston and Beaumont, there are an estimated 14,000 to 20,000 head of cattle alone, making evacuation before a storm nearly impossible. In Dallas and other major seafood markets, we can expect tighter supplies, fluctuating prices, and potential delays in certain high-demand products, including Gulf shrimp, snapper, and oysters. Having spent time on these boats myself, I understand the immense challenges these fishermen face, and my hope is for a swift recovery and minimal damage. Over the next few weeks, it will be critical to stay informed, plan ahead, and support our partners along the Gulf Coast. May is Wildfire Awareness Month in the U.S., but wildfires are already in the news. Our hearts are with the people affected by the devastating wildfires that raged across parts of Texas and Oklahoma in March. Tragically, catastrophic wildfires and the emergency Mass Care responses they trigger are becoming regular occurrences in the U.S. and Canada. This is why it’s imperative to learn as much as possible from each wildfire to create more informed emergency response and recovery plans. We are currently working with emergency management teams in Oregon to learn from their experiences managing the unprecedented 2020 wildfires in Oregon. Their emergency food plans did not anticipate the scale of this disaster, which displaced more than 40,000 people. Our mission is to use the information we gain from such partnerships across the U.S. and Canada to help other states and regions become better prepared to respond to emergency food situations. We were honored to present this work with our Oregon partners at the 2023 National Homeland Security Conference.
