Larry: as you might imagine, I would have to respectfully disagree with this assessment. My own experience over four decades, and my own reading and reflection on the ongoing issues, would suggest otherwise. I can agree with the idea that the higher education system in America is an outstanding enterprise worthy of praise and respect, and has many quality public and private institutions, beyond those that have elite name recognition, and at the same time hold the competing thought that there are serious challenges that merit the attention of our smartest professionals. This includes what I see as the partisan way too many approach the work of education in the college setting, which has resulted in flagging public confidence in what we do. I do not believe this can all be written off to disinformation, false narratives and conservative enemies with axes to grind. I also do not believe that circling the wagons and putting blinders on will serve higher education well down the road. We can have this discussion in a rational way without disrespectful, ideological name calling and conspiracy proclamations, which too frequently characterize the exchanges. When people engage in this way, they are no better than the fringes they complain about so often. I am with you on the rankings though!!
With apologies to those who can’t access this article, I share it as yet another example of the folly of aspersion casting on colleges and universities. IMHO it’s as bad as ranking systems that attempt to characterize an entire institution with a single ranking number. I’m amazed at the lengths people will go to tear down arguably America’s best asset…higher education.

Berkeley’s acceptance rate currently stands at 11.6%. This means that out of every 100 applicants, only around 11 are offered admission to the university. While this competitive acceptance rate may seem intimidating, it also reflects the high caliber of students that Berkeley attracts. One of the factors contributing to Berkeley’s low acceptance rate is its reputation as one of the top public universities in the world. With its renowned faculty, cutting-edge research opportunities, and vibrant campus life, Berkeley has become a dream school for many aspiring students. #ucberkeleyacceptancerate #acceptancerate #collegeadmissions #admissionsight #princeton #highschool #harvard #highschoolstudents #caltech #students #college #university #undergrad #education #ivyleague #admissions #academics #stanford #yale #mit #columbia #cornell #brown #upenn #uchicago

Stanford debating return of standardized tests for admission: Stanford freshman Antonio Alonso-Stepanov and and his freshman counterpart Dylan Rem wrote a column in the Stanford Review arguing that standardized tests should be mandatory again. "Stanford must follow Dartmouth’s lead and revive standardized testing as a mandatory factor for applications in order to promote meritocracy and fairness. Out of all the metrics in the college admissions process, standardized tests are undoubtedly the most objective." "We've heard from upper classmen and older people that the professors have definitely complained about basic math skills and also work ethic–people asking for deadline extensions, etc.-- that has definitely deteriorated in the past few years," Rem said. He added, "And it, maybe, correlation, causation, COVID obviously caused learning loss, but I wouldn't be surprised if standardized testing played a role in that." Bravo - even students recognize the benefit of standardize testing - the rigors, the ability to compare across a level playing field from a common point of reference.

At the #top of the list, #Princeton University is the best #university in the country, known for its physics, economics, and international relations departments. Notably, it’s a rare Ivy league university that does not have a law, medical, or business school. #MIT places second, and #Harvard and #Stanford tie for third. #Yale rounds out the top five. Private universities, including seven Ivy League colleges, dominate the top of the rankings. Meanwhile, the highest-ranked public schools are tied at 15th, both state schools in California. For affordability, since the higher ranks are populated by private universities, there tends to be a broad #correlation of better universities being more expensive. That said, the most #expensive school in the top 50 ranks is actually the University of Southern California, tied at 28th, for $68,237/year. As it happens, also tied at 28th, the University of #Florida is the most #affordable public school for in-state students ($6,381/year) and Florida State University tied at 53rd, is the most affordable for out-of-staters at $21,683/year.

How do you get your child into an Ivy League university? These eight schools – Brown University, Columbia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and Yale University – are famous for being the best of the best. But securing a place is notoriously difficult. Only around 4% of applicants are accepted into the schools each year. In comparison, University of Oxford offered a place to more than 14% of students who applied in 2023, and University of Cambridge to more than 20%. Cracking the Ivy League application process is essential. For many families based in the UK, this means seeking the advice of an experienced #educational adviser. Spear's speaks to Adam Nguyen, founder of Ivy Link, and Christopher Rim, CEO and founder of Command Education, who explain why, when applying for Ivy League schools, outstanding #academic results is simply not enough – and what students (and their families) need to do.
