We are beginning a new series about the different types of imaging scans, starting with an overview of when, how, and why they are used. Scans are a type of imaging that create pictures of the inside of the body. Scans are used to diagnose metastatic disease, look for new sites of metastasis, monitor progression, and assess response to treatment. Through clinical trials, researchers are studying how to improve imaging and how to decide when imaging should be done. We’re continuing our series of providing an overview of imaging scans for MBC. This month, we’re covering positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) scans. A PET scan is an imaging test that uses a radioactive substance called a tracer that can look for and attach to cancer cells. A CT scan produces body pictures created by X-ray energy. Participating in a clinical trial studying imaging scans may be an opportunity to get a scan you might otherwise not get because of considerations such as insurance or a non-standard use for the scan.
